Left-wing animal rights extremists initiated a so-called “blockade” against McDonald’s four distribution centers in the U.K. this weekend and vowed to keep the “blockade” going for at least 24 hours, with the goal being to convince McDonald’s to give up meat.

In a press release published Saturday, the animal rights extremist group Animal Rebellion said the so-called “protests” were designed to engender “economic disruption to the McDonald’s supply chain” as a wake-up call to the “animal agriculture industry.”

“Animal Rebellion, a mass movement using nonviolent civil disobedience to call for a sustainable plant-based food system, is demanding that McDonald’s becomes fully plant-based by 2025. However, they say McDonald’s is just a symbol of the system they are trying to change, which is the entire animal agriculture industry,” it read.

The press release also drew attention to the alleged threat of climate change.

“The meat and dairy industry is destroying our planet: causing huge amounts of rainforest deforestation, emitting immense quantities of greenhouse gases and killing billions of animals each year,” a statement from a spokesperson read.

“The only sustainable and realistic way to feed ten billion people is with a plant-based food system. Organic, free-range and ‘sustainable’ animal-based options simply aren’t good enough.”

Animal Rebellion claimed its “blockades” would affect 1,300 restaurants that combined serve an estimated 3.5 million customers per day.

In a statement to the Associated Press, a spokesperson for the fast food chain neither confirmed nor denied this allegation and said only that it’s assessing the impact of “the disruption” and wishes to apologize “for any disappointment caused” to customers.

However, McDonald’s apology may not even be necessary. If you pull up any of Animal Rebellion’s tweets and take a look at the replies, you’ll find multitudes of people slamming the organization for trying to shove its ideology down others’ throats.

Look:

You’ll also find a lot of mockery as well.

Look:

The point is that the public doesn’t seem to blame McDonald’s for what’s happening, in part because Animal Rebellion is making sure to let angry customers know that they’re the ones truly responsible.

Case in point:

That’s certainly one way to build a fan base …

As of Sunday afternoon, it wasn’t clear how many of the “blockades” were still ongoing. At least one of the “blockades” had for sure ended, and judging by the tweet below, some of the “protesters” had wound up in jail:

It’s not clear what was on the menu for Sunday at the local jail, though chances are the dining options included meat.
