There might finally be an answer to what many believe is inexplicably weird and contradictory mask-wearing guidance from the CDC: Liberals are afraid to remove their masks in case it might make them look like Republicans.
The report from the DCist “overheard of the week” column alleges that two masked women were walking in downtown Washington D.C discussing the recent update to the CDC guidance when one apparently said, “I guess I’m vaccinated so I don’t have to wear a mask outside but… I really don’t want people to think I’m a Republican.”
Earlier this week, the CDC announced updates to their face veiling guidelines, which are alleged to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. The new guidelines say vaccinated individuals can forgo the face mask when they are outside unless they are in crowds of people.
The national guidance has changed several times over the past year with Dr. Anthony Fauci famously telling Americans initially that it wasn’t necessary to wear a mask and later flip-flopping to ultimately recommend not one but two masks. Never mind the fact that he has been spotted without what appears to be the requisite liberal mask attire on occasion.
Other reports confirm that the DC women aren’t alone with their fears.
There are other reports of people being scared to take the mask off for fear they might be likened to a “Trump” supporter, a group of people that President Joe Biden called “insurrectionists” and “domestic terrorists” this past January.
The seemingly liberal ideology of mask-wearing has been turned into a political division point throughout the pandemic. For example, last summer’s outdoor, open-air, anti-police riots were hailed as a first amendment right regardless of COVID restrictions while Kirk Cameron gathering a group of Christmas carolers was deemed as “irresponsible” according to Fox News.
According to an NBC Wall Street Journal poll from last summer, “a person’s mask-wearing habits could indicate how they’ll vote in the 2020 presidential race.” Similarly, a Pew Research Center study from June of last year indicated 29 percent of Republicans thought masks would be worn all the time in public and 65 percent of liberals felt the same.
Other public figures like MSNBC’s Joy Reid, who is fully vaccinated, proudly announced this week, “I am among the fully vaccinated, joined team Pfizer. I did go jogging today in the park. This was the mask that I wore with a doctor’s mask under it.” She enthusiastically reported that “most of the people that I saw that were in the park, the park was packed. I would say like 95 percent of the people still had masks on.”
Despite the frequent calls to “follow the science” over the past year, this report reveals that maybe the mask-wearing zombies could just be scared little kittens, afraid to be likened to those abhorrent freethinking Republicans like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Texas Governor Greg Abbott who have lifted all restrictions in their respective states and are now reporting fewer COVID cases than their northern liberal neighbors like Michigan and New York who are still imposing draconian lockdown orders.
