Biden’s ‘trust the science’ approach hits a political snag

The FDA’s decision to pause the rollout of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine sparked criticism from across the spectrum that the administration was being too cautious.

President Joe Biden pledged to maintain an unwavering fidelity to science since the Covid-19 pandemic first emerged in the United States, again and again citing it as his North Star in navigating the deadly virus.

That strategy had mostly gone off without a major snag — until now.

On Tuesday, the government’s own scientists recommended a pause in administering the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, amid reports that a handful of patients had developed serious blood clots that may be linked to it. The White House embraced the decision and officials on Tuesday expressed hope the pace of vaccinations would not slow down, insisting that there were plenty of Pfizer and Moderna vaccines to meet an administration goal of having enough vaccine supply for every U.S. adult by May 31.
