The grossly disparate way in which the media treats Republican presidents and Democrat presidents became especially clear this Friday after current Democrat President Joe Biden stumbled and then fell while climbing a set of stairs.
While every mainstream outlet covered Biden stumbling and falling as he tried to board Air Force One, they did so relatively quietly and with little fanfare.
Over at CNN, for instance, the network published a brief report titled “White House says Biden is ‘100% fine’ after he tripped boarding Air Force One.” Meanwhile, on-air, reporter Jeff Zeleny quickly announced the event around 4:00 pm.
“Earlier in the day, as he left Washington on a windy morning, Biden struggled to find his footing as he climbed the stairs of Air Force One, prompting a White House spokeswoman to say he’s 100 percent fine,” he reported.
Watch:
Yet last year when then-President Donald Trump merely walked down a ramp rather slowly — but without stumbling or falling — CNN went into overdrive analyzing the faux incident and using it to speculate about the president’s health.
Over at CNN.com, a nearly 1,000-word long analysis piece appeared:
@CNN was of course all over #rampgate too. @ChrisCillizza wrote an entire story about why the ramp mattered! pic.twitter.com/6zOTmaOkO2

And then on the air, the network’s various hosts repeatedly questioned Trump’s health:
No big deal, just CNN’s John King and Abby Phillip spreading conspiracy theories that President Trump is in poor health. pic.twitter.com/xfP3CmChRM

CNN’s Alisyn Camerota on Trump at West Point: “There are some questions this morning about President Trump’s health…[M]aybe he just has a hard time going down a gently sloping ramp, but do you see something, possibly neurological that could be throwing off his balance?” pic.twitter.com/hz39lPESZ2

You bet CNN’s Chris Cillizza was all up in arms over Trump’s West Point visit, telling Brianna Keilar that it was a big deal and a big concern because “Trump is 74 years old” and “we know so little about” his “past medical history” pic.twitter.com/ZtIet6eaqH

These examples are just from CNN.
The rest of the media also went into overdrive.
Look:
I mean Trump actually had to *defend himself* against these media allegations. @Slate, no friend of the former president, even said so. pic.twitter.com/g90guE1pwM

I mean not even kidding you @Forbes did a whole breakdown of the ramp situation AND how people were reacting to it. pic.twitter.com/2SNPT62s0L

Take a bow, @NYDailyNews pic.twitter.com/ehJaJiDmr9
— Drew Holden (@DrewHolden360) March 19, 2021
And the British press. Well. I don’t even know. @BBCNews & @TheSun were dogged in their pursuit of whether Trump was, in fact, afraid of stairs. pic.twitter.com/zZ3qk2YVIy
— Drew Holden (@DrewHolden360) March 19, 2021
I mean, cmon! @washingtonpost *fact checked* Trump’s claim that the stairs were slippery!
Are you kidding me?! @PhilipRucker @seungminkim pic.twitter.com/5El4hdlILm
— Drew Holden (@DrewHolden360) March 19, 2021
Remember this very earnest and concerned @nytimes story (and video!)? Suggesting his “halting walk” “raises new health questions”??
I wonder if we’ll hear about how Biden is the oldest president when (if?) his stair story hits print. pic.twitter.com/8F6eUIwYQ8
— Drew Holden (@DrewHolden360) March 19, 2021
And people picked this story up. This was a whole news cycle! Here’s @kylegriffin1 and @jaketapper sharing this story as if it were something that mattered. pic.twitter.com/qZYPYLmRWb

About a year later, the response to Biden stumbling and falling three times in a row seems noticeably muted and at times even defensive.
“We have all run up stairs and had that moment ourselves. If you haven’t, you are not a human being. That’s for sure,” MSNBC’s Chuck Todd, a known propagandist, said Friday.
Listen:
Yet after the ramp incident last year, MSNBC’s various reporters and commentators spent nearly 30 minutes analyzing the incident and using it to question then-President Trump’s health, according to the conservative media watchdog group NewsBusters.
If you work in the media and you made a big deal when Trump walked down a slippery ramp a little slower than usual so he would *not* fall and you are not making a big deal of Biden falling 3 times today trying to walk up some steps, you are the reason people don’t trust the media

Meanwhile, the media seem so hellbent on protecting Biden that they’re now even fact-checking fun, obviously fake memes about his stairs incident.
Memes like this one posted Friday by Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr.:
It wasn’t the wind folks. pic.twitter.com/jYc01dBZCe
— Donald Trump Jr. (@DonaldJTrumpJr) March 19, 2021
In response to Trump Jr. posting this, The Hill published a veritable fact-check.

— The Hill (@thehill) March 19, 2021
Regarding Trump Jr., he too is keenly aware of the double standards.
“I remember the press bashing Trump for touching the rail once,” he wrote in another tweet, referencing the ramp incident.
I remember the press bashing Trump for touching the rail once. Biden falls repeatedly but I’m sure he’s the picture of health. No wonder all our enemies are pouncing simultaneously and mocking him publicly. pic.twitter.com/R1qN9DDHFW
— Donald Trump Jr. (@DonaldJTrumpJr) March 19, 2021
The irony is that, after the ramp incident, then-Democrat presidential candidate Biden mocked Trump Jr.’s father.
“Look at how he steps and look how I step. Watch how I run up ramps and he stumbles down ramps,” he said at the time.
FLASHBACK -> Biden mocks Trump’s ramp walk at West Point and claims he’s stronger: “Look at how he steps and look at how I step. Watch how I run up ramps and he stumbles down ramps. Come on.” pic.twitter.com/U7CL0dBSQA
