Ted Cruz affirms that current border crisis stems from Biden policies: ‘I’ve got the receipts’

Sen. Ted Cruz on Thursday blamed the “crisis” situation along the U.S.-Mexico border on President Joe Biden’s decision to reverse course in terms of enforcement of policies pursued by his predecessor, Donald Trump.

In a Twitter thread, the Texas Republican posted several pre-election video clips featuring then-Democratic nominee Biden making pledges to migrants that Cruz says are driving the current border crush.

“There is crisis on the southern border of Joe Biden’s creation. Throughout his campaign, Biden promised illegal aliens benefits, amnesty, and lax enforcement of immigration law,” Cruz began. “I’ve got the receipts.”

The GOP senator followed his initial tweet with a post featuring a video of Biden telling the Noticias news agency that he would provide illegal immigrants with taxpayer-supported free health care.

In his back-and-forth with the reporter in December 2019, who said that currently, illegal aliens cannot access care through the Affordable Care Act exchanges, Biden was adamant that he would ensure they could.

In a second clip posted by Cruz from January 2020, “Biden promised to end illegal alien detention across the board,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, in February 2020, a clip featured Biden saying during a CNN town hall, “Nobody is going to be deported in my first 100 days.”

Biden did, indeed, impose a 100-day moratorium on most deportations, but that order has been successfully challenged by states which sued after a federal judge issued a permanent injunction in late February. Also, migrants traveling in caravans towards the U.S. border in January said it was Biden’s 100-day promise that convinced them to make the trip.

Cruz then posted a clip of Biden telling CNN during a presidential debate in March 2020 that illegal aliens arrested by local police should not be turned over to federal immigration authorities.

The GOP senator followed that up with a clip of Biden telling a local CBS affiliate he would suspend deportations.

Then, in an August 2020 interview with NPR, Biden said that illegal immigrants ought to have the very same benefits “everybody else has access to.”

In an eighth and final post, Cruz noted that Biden promised amnesty to tens of millions of illegal aliens in a September 2020 interview.

“We’re seeing a surge of illegal immigration (in just the past month, authorities have arrested and encouraged more than 100,000 migrants) because illegal aliens know Biden will not enforce the law,” Cruz noted.

Other Republicans have blamed the current border surge on Biden’s reversal of most Trump-era border and immigration enforcement orders and policies, including “Remain in Mexico,” which was credited with ending migrant caravan crises in 2018 and early 2019.

That includes Cruz’s Texas Senate colleague, John Cornyn, who told Fox News last week the president’s “rule of thumb” appears to be “whatever Trump’s policies were … do the opposite.”

“If they think a radio ad in Guatemala or some rhetoric from the podium in Washington, D.C. is going to keep people from trying to enter the United States, they’re just fooling themselves, and what I really regret is they have absolutely no plan. They underestimated this. They had no plan to deal with it, and this is in the face of a pandemic right now,” he said.
