Local and statewide GOP officials are calling upon a New Jersey mayor to step down after she reportedly implied that President Donald Trump was an “orange monster” and recommended that Trump voters “go f***” themselves.

Flemington, N.J., Mayor Betsy Driver, a Democrat, allegedly made the following comments on a private Facebook post that the Hunterdon County GOP somehow got a hold of and posted.

“This is day one of the new SCOTUS term — the religious zealots want to enact the Christian version of Sharia law. If you voted for the orange monster with COVID, go f*** yourself. If you plan on voting for him again, unfriend me and go f*** yourself again.”

According to MyCentralJersey.com, the mayor was reacting to what occurred as the U.S. Supreme Court opened up for business. “The post was made on the first day of the United States Supreme Court’s new term a week ago, when Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito criticized  the court’s 2015 same-sex marriage decision when the court declined to hear a case brought by a former Kentucky county clerk who refused to issue a marriage license for such couples.” Driver also claims that the GOP shared a cropped image of her post.

In a statement, Gabe Plumer, the Hunterdon County GOP chair, proposed a bipartisan call for Driver’s immediate resignation:

“While I don’t quite know where to begin, I do know where to end: Mayor Driver, you should resign and you should do it now. Your statement is antithetical to the principles of representative democracy. It is further proof that you do not represent the people of Flemington, the character of Hunterdon County, and the values of at least a part of the Democrat party. While I trust Republicans agree with me, I also call on Freeholder Candidate Heller and all current Flemington candidates to join me and many others in a bipartisan call for Mayor Driver’s immediate resignation.”

Posing a rhetorical question, state GOP leader Doug Steinhardt asked “I think we all know she will never step down, but is it too much to ask for her to apologize?”

The mayor is still in the driver’s seat and apparently has no plans to submit her resignation, accusing GOP officials of ” being pearl-clutchers:

“The Hunterdon County GOP calling for my resignation by using a cropped image of the original post on my private Facebook page speaks volumes to their ongoing dishonesty and duplicity, That they are that triggered and clutching their pearls over my being upset and angry at the threats to my LGBTQ family by a Supreme Court enabled by their support of a president who is hate-filled and unhinged every day is sad,” Driver told TAPinto.

“It reflects their privilege that refuses to acknowledge America’s diversity and their own intolerance of anyone who disagrees with them. By not calling out their own supporters who are now resorting to personal attacks and threats on me and my family just shows how depraved the Hunterdon GOP has become,” she added.

After an attempt to put a censure motion on the town council agenda failed on a 3-3 vote, Driver said that “People can not vote for me the next time I’m up for election.”

Driver is reportedly also a foe of support-the-police, thin-blue-line symbology which she ordered removed from a thoroughfare in the borough of Flemington at one point over the summer.

Betsy Driver, a former CBS News producer, served two years on the town (i.e., borough) council before being elected mayor.
