As a presidential candidate in 2016, Donald Trump routinely slammed traditional politicians for all talk and no action. He seems to be raising the same concerns about the ongoing investigation into how the Obama Deep State illegally spied on his campaign, which he characterized as treason.
Depending on the outcome, history will recognize Bill Barr as the country’s greatest attorney general, or in the alternative, just an average guy if he opts to oversee the investigation in a politically correct way, the president declared in typically stark terms.
What Trump was getting at is a feeling that the ongoing investigation into the origins of the sham Russia collusion investigation, a.k.a. Spygate, currently being conducted by U.S. Attorney John Durham could let those at the highest levels of government off the hook and just bring charges against underlings.
His comments came in a wide-ranging, high-energy telephone interview with Maria Bartiromo on her Fox Business show Mornings with Maria.
When asked by Bartiromo about the status of the Durham probe, the president responded as follows:
“I hope he’s doing a great job. and I hope they’re not going to be politically correct. The fact is that President Obama knew everything. Vice President Biden, as dumb as he may be, he knew everything, and everybody else knew everything. And Comey, and Brennan, and Clapper, they all were terrible, and they lied to Congress…
“They spied on my campaign, which is treason. They spied, both before and after I won, using the intelligence apparatus of the United States to take down a president, a legally elected president, a duly elected president of the United States. It’s the single biggest political crime in the history of our country.”

“I hope they are doing a job. I hope they’re not gonna be politically correct and say, ‘you know, let’s get the lower guys that forged the documents going into FISA, let’s just get a couple of the lower guys…’ Bill Barr can go down as the greatest attorney general in the history of our country or he can go down as just an average guy. It depends on what’s gonna happen.
Trump also decried the fact that Mueller prosecutors destroyed the life of Gen. Michael Flynn and innocent people, but so far no one who committed wrongful acts has been hauled into court.
The speculation is that a report from the John Durham investigation could emerge by Labor Day, with the possibility of associated criminal charges. Should Biden win the presidency, the government will likely drop any and all criminal prosecutions related to Spygate.
AG Barr has previously indicated that a criminal investigation of Obama or Biden is unlikely. He has also separately said that “not every abuse of power, no matter how outrageous, is necessarily a federal crime.”
