Press helps Dem Senator ‘twist’ classified briefings to make Biden Burisma probe seem sketchy, Sen. Ron Johnson says

With election season upon us, Democrats are again rolling out the tired Russia collusion/meddling narrative to apparently try to derail and deflect from an investigation into alleged Biden family corruption, but U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.) isn’t having it. “Flat-out lies,” Johnson declared.

Johnson’s probe relates to Burisma Holdings, the Ukrainian energy company linked to Hunter Biden.

The chair of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Johnson called out Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D- Conn.) for claiming in a Washington Post Op-Ed that he, Johnson, received some dirt on Biden from an apparently sketchy Russian source.

In the opinion piece, Blumenthal wrote, in part:

“On [August 5], The Post reported that Sen. Ron Johnson…is moving ahead with an investigation into presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s family using documents provided to the senator by the son of a former KGB officer. Johnson’s actions are of such concern to the CIA, according to news reports, that the agency has refused to brief him. Think of it: Congress may become a forum for debunked conspiracy theories peddled by Kremlin proxies.”

In a seven-part Twitter response, Johnson essentially accused his across-the-aisle colleague of being untruthful about where he is getting his information or whether the material constitutes disinformation.

“Sen Blumenthal ’s twisting of classified briefings and repeating of false news reports is beyond the pale. It is a flat-out lie that I received the documents from Ukrainians that Democrats keep claiming. And they know it.

“It is unconscionable that Democrats and the press continue to report it. It is a flat-out lie that I asked for the CIA to brief our committee and that they refused. We’ve already been briefed repeatedly on these issues, Democrats simply didn’t like what they heard.”

“Ranking member Peters asked me to arrange an intelligence briefing months ago. We did, and were told there was no new info to brief on. That wasn’t enough for Dems to use against us, so they continued to push CIA for info to try to derail our investigation. To my knowledge CIA has not responded to THEIR requests.

“Our investigation is focused on documents and officials from government agencies and a U.S. Democrat-linked lobbying firm.

“The only ones responsible for furthering Russian disinformation to interfere in our election are the Democrats in Congress and the Biden campaign, and the media that is willingly amplifying their lies. They should all be ashamed.”

The Biden family has been accused of raking in big bucks from Ukraine and China under ethically questionable circumstances. to say the least.

The back and forth between the two senators depicts the way it works in D.C. generally, particularly in the Trump era.

A bogus, anti-GOP or anti-Trump story gets planted, sometimes by the Deep State, with a compliant media source, like the Post. Democrat politicians then grandstand about it and give it legitimacy, which in turn gives more media outlets free rein to report on it and increase its presumed credibility. The original Russia witch hunt, and a series of “bombshell stories” that actually lacked substance, epitomized that.

This is why Instapundit‘s Glenn Reynolds often describes journalists as Democrat operatives with bylines.

Further on the subject of prevarications, Blumenthal, the state attorney general in Connecticut for 20 years, lied about serving in Vietnam while a member of the Marine Corps Reserve. He managed to get elected and reelected to the U.S. Senate anyway.
