Sen. Kamala Harris thinks her debate jab at President Trump was so clever that her campaign can capitalize on it.
The campaign for the California Democrat and 2020 hopeful made a fundraising appeal on Friday using a phrase from the Democratic primary debate the night before.
The subject line of an email sent to supporters on Friday read, “The ‘little dude’ from the Wizard of Oz,” The Hill reported.
The reference was to her description of Trump during a response to a debate question in which she likened the president to the “small dude” from behind the curtain in the film “The Wizard of Oz.”
“We’ve got a guy in the White House who has been erratic on trade policy, he conducts trade policy by tweet, frankly born out of his fragile ego,” Harris said on the debate stage after being asked how her trade policy would differ from that of former President Obama.
“I’m not a protectionist Democrat. Look, we need to sell our stuff. And that means we need to sell it to people overseas. That means we need trade policies that allow that to happen,” she added, explaining her stand on the “complicated relationship” with China while criticizing all that Trump has tried to accomplish in the area of trade policy.
“But the bottom line is this, Donald Trump in office on trade policy, you know, he reminds me of that guy in ‘The Wizard of Oz,’ when you pull back the curtain, it’s a really small dude,” she said, as the audience erupted into laughter.
Harris seemed to find the quip entertaining herself as she smugly laughed at her own cleverness while ABC News’s George Stephanopoulos joked, “I’m not even going to take the bait, Senator Harris.”
The next day, her campaign sought to get some more mileage out of the phrase in the fundraising email.
“Democrats need a candidate who can prosecute the case against four more years of Donald Trump in the White House,” the email read.
“Last night, Kamala demonstrated she is that candidate by challenging this failed president,” it continued. “And while Democrats fought about the details of our health care plans, Kamala reminded everyone that the real threat to our care is Mitch McConnell and the guy living at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.”
While the 2020 hopeful celebrated her snappy jab at Trump, her attacks on the president seem to have questionable results as her self-righteous lecture at the outset of the debate night proved.

Harris spoke directly to Trump in her opening statements because “we all know he’s watching.”
Of course, the president had the last laugh because he was certainly not watching the Democrats’ circus act but was actually giving a speech in Baltimore at the 2019 House Republican Conference Member Retreat Dinner.
“Donald Trump, I know you’re watching,” Harris says.
No, he isn’t. He’s literally giving a speech at the Republican National Retreat (see top right) right now. #DemDebate pic.twitter.com/QfpKizWE3I— Yuichiro Kakutani (@kakutani_y) September 13, 2019
