The Rockettes delivered a seemingly flawless performance in freezing temperatures in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade but many have found plenty wrong with the dance group’s lineup.
The famous New York precision dancers braved record cold parade temperatures on Thursday, wearing gold sequined dresses in a three-minute Christmas dance routine that showed off their signature high kicks and synchronized dance moves.

But the reaction from many online was just lukewarm, and for some, raging hot as they blasted the 36-member group for its lack of diversity as almost every one of them was white.
Come on Rockettes y’all couldn’t get more people of color? #MacysParade

The Rockettes always have like 2 blacks at the most like come on do better #MacysParade

The Rockettes seem even whiter this year despite putting all (read: 3) WOC in the front of the Macy’s performance. Sigh.

Women have to be between 5’6” and 5’10” in height to even audition for a coveted position with the 80-member cast. which puts on regular performances, including the annual Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall.

The Thanksgiving Day production was panned online as viewers blasted the dance group.
Only 2 women of color in the Rockettes? Really? 2?!! Out of 36???

I’m I the only one that noticed that all the rockettes are white except for 2 of them lmaoooo #MacysDayParade

I see the @Rockettes are literally having themselves a WHITE Christmas. ?

I would think it’d be pretty difficult to cast so many white women in NYC for the #Rockettes but they seem to pull it off every year.

So I’m watching the rockettes and I notice there’s only 2 black women and no Asian women and the rest are white…..so that’s not cool. Not sure why it’s so hard to hire diverse dancers in NYC , AKA the most diverse city in America
— Amanda (@frogsquid) November 22, 2018
It’s 2018. How are the @Rockettes still 95% white?

Someone did come to the Rockettes’ defense, tweeting about the demanding auditon process.
Wow, people already complaining about the #Rockettes not having many women of color. You need to have a certain height and weight to get in, people! It shouldn’t be about skin, it should be about how these women practice they whole lives to do something you can only dream of. pic.twitter.com/wvPMuhX8z8

But even that tweet was shredded.
are you kidding me. is it really easier to believe that of tens of thousands of kids growing up wanting to dance and thousands who went to school for it and do it as a profession, only white women wanted this & none of them are women of color who’d want this without being forced?

I’ve seen a lot of dance competitions and recitals in my days… there are plenty of women of color who meet all the requirements. Plenty. They’re making a statement here. And it’s embarrassing.

Founded in 1925, the Rockettes have been performing in New York City’s Radio City Music Hall since 1932 and have been part of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade since 1952.
