Metal detectors were not operational the day an Alabama high schooler was fatally shot, the school superintendent said Thursday.
The shooter, who has not been identified, killed 17-year-old Huffman High School student Courtlin Arrington and injured another 17-year-old student in Birmingham, Ala., the Associated Press reported. Police arrested a “person of interest” Thursday.
“Yesterday, although we have metal detectors here in Huffman High School, our metal detectors were not in use,” Birmingham City Schools Superintendent Dr. Lisa Herring said.
The new information regarding the metal detectors contradicts an earlier statement from Birmingham interim Police Chief Orlando Wilson.
Arrington was a smart and well-liked student who “was lost to senseless gun violence,” Herring said. Huffman High School contained 43 entrances and used stationary and wand metal detectors, the superintendent said.
“We consider it accidental until the investigation takes us elsewhere,” Wilson said, according to AP.
“We are examining the efficiency of the protocols and procedures that were executed yesterday,” Herring added. “And as superintendent, I can articulate to you that we have not only heightened our procedures, but we are revamping and revisiting with an extreme amount of urgency those protocols, not just for Huffman High School, but for every single school in Birmingham City Schools.”
The Daily Caller News Foundation reached out to the Birmingham police for comment but received none in time for press.
