Olympic snowboarder Shaun White apologized after letting the American flag drag on the snow following his gold medal win in the halfpipe Tuesday.

White, 31, caused uproar following his Olympic win for mishandling the American flag by letting it drag in the snow. White’s actions ignore the U.S. Codewhich calls for “respect for the flag” and mandates that the flag should never touch the ground, floor or water, according to the New York Post.
“I remember being handed the flag. I was trying to put my gloves on and hold the flag and the board,” White said. “I definitely didn’t mean any disrespect… Sorry for that. But I’m definitely proud — very proud — to be part of Team USA and being an American and to be representing for everyone back home,” White told The Washington Post. White also accidentally stepped on the flag following his win.
The decorated Olympian also denied resurfaced sexual harassment and assault allegations, calling them “gossip” during an inquiry from a reporter during a Wednesday press conference.
