California Democrat Sen. Kamala Harris urged people at a Georgia church Sunday to remember the First Amendment as she seemingly referred to recent protests during the national anthem at football games..

Harris, speaking at First Congregational Church, alluded to the football players who have decided to take a knee to speak out on police brutality, reports The Hill.

“Let’s speak the truth that when Americans demand recognition that their lives matter, or kneel to call attention to injustice, that that is an expression of free speech, protected by our Constitution, and they should not be threatened or bullied,” Harris said.

Harris also mentioned that  racism, sexism, homophobia and anti-Semitism are real issues in America that need to be talked about in order to fix them. Despite these problems, Harris declared that Americans have much more in common than what separates them.

“First Church, at this pivotal moment, I say that we cannot throw up our hands. Instead this is a moment in time to roll up our sleeves. As the reverend and I were talking earlier, I’ll say this: I’m a realist. I’m also an optimist…” Harris said. “So as we shine a light on the path toward peace, let us do so as proud patriots. Let us have the courage to speak truth. And together, armed with our commonality, armed with our faith, let us be strong in our fight for justice.”

President Donald Trump has been a staunch opponent of the protests, urging players to stand and show respect for their country and its flag.

“Very important that NFL players STAND tomorrow, and always, for the playing of our National Anthem. Respect our Flag and our Country!” Trump tweeted Saturday.
