Like it or not, ObamaCare is collapsing under the weight of rising premiums and ever decreasing options. Whether the collapse happens under essentially the Democratic regime that created the problem in the first place or a Republican administration that has made its repeal and replacement a top campaign priority is up to the American voters.
On Tuesday, to mark the start of ObamaCare open enrollment, Donald Trump and Mike Pence couldn’t have made the difference clearer, highlighting the law’s various failures along with President Obama’s many broken promises and offering a 7-point plan for healthcare reform.
According to the Obama administration’s own admission, ObamaCare exchange premium rates will rise an average of 25 percent next year. Trump, calling the Affordable Care Act a “catastrophe,” vowed to a Valley Forge, Pennsylvania crowd to “ask Congress to convene a special session so we can repeal and replace.”
For all of Trump’s excellent rhetoric, it was his partner, Mike Pence, who provided the details, dismantling the law piece by piece in brilliant fashion.
“I stand before you today because open enrollment begins,” the Indiana governor said. “Once again millions of Americans will be disappointed by the lack of options and shocked by premiums.”
“President Obama said his health plan would cut the cost of family premiums by up to $2,500 a year. Not true. If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. Not true. If you like your health insurance plan, you can keep it. Not true,” Pence said. “The truth is premiums for employer plans have gone up by almost $5,000 since President Obama took office. And last week the Obama administration announced that the average premiums under Obamacare on the Exchanges are going to go up another 25% nationally.”
Pence also sharply criticized Hillary Clinton as untrustworthy on the issue based on her track record.
“We can’t trust Hillary Clinton with our health care any more than we can trust her with classified information,” he said. “ObamaCare was a catastrophic failure. Hillary Clinton says she wants to double down on that failure.”
