PHILADELPHIA — Former President Bill Clinton attempted to humanize his wife Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton with a slew of personal stories at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday evening.
The former president kicked of his speech by discussing how they met, how she turned down his engagement more than once and the birth of their daughter. He talked about his admiration for her policy agenda and accomplishments — and notably skipped stories from his late presidency.
“Well, she is insatiable curious, a natural leader, good organizer, and the best darn change maker I have ever met in my entire life,” he said to the cheering arena.
He lauded her accomplishments as a New York senator and secretary of state, claiming she “repeatedly” received “praise from prominent Republicans” during her tenure in the positions.
“You could drop her in any trouble spot – pick one – come back in a month, and somehow, someway, she will have made it better,” he continued. “That is just who she is. there are clear, achievable, affordable responses to our challenges. but we will not get to them if america makes the wrong choice in this election.”
The Democratic nominee has been widely criticized for being calculated and robotic in her approach to politics, a sharp contrast to her husband’s demeanor.
Following a couple swipes at Republican nominee Donald Trump, Clinton closed out his speech asking Americans to vote for his wife, arguing she cares more about the nation’s children.
“Your children and grandchildren will bless you forever if you do. God bless you. Thank you,” he said.
