Sen. Ted Cruz R-Tx has a big announcement today.

According to reports out of New Hampshire, Cruz announced that he will be picking former presidential candidate Carly Fiorina as his running mate, if he becomes the nominee.

Cruz currently only has 562 delegates, which is far behind GOP front-runner Donald Trump’s 954 delegate count.

The Cruz-Fiorina team up is not a surprise to the national press, as the two have campaigned together multiple times and just last week, Cruz said he was vetting Fiorina for the vice presidential position, should he be the republican nominee.

But the connections between Cruz and Fiorina go deeper.

Back in September the Federal Election Commission (FEC) announced that it was opening an inquiry into a case where a Cruz-supporting super PAC had given $500,000 to a Fiorina-supporting super PAC.

Here’s the document showing the donation:

At the time, Fiorina was still in the GOP presidential race. And though the money-giving is allowed for PAC’s, it is unusual campaign behavior, thus prompting an investigation to determine what the money was specifically used for.

To date, the Cruz super PAC’s half million contribution to Fiorina remains its largest expenditure.

Additionally, executives with the organization ‘Defend Our Freedoms Foundation’ have requested that the FEC launch a full investigation into the matter, citing the close ties between Cruz and Fiorina.
