Police released surveillance footage this week of an attack on two students — one Hispanic and one Muslim — at a convenience store over the weekend that was allegedly committed by a supporter of Donald Trump.
Khondoker Usama claimed that he and his friend, a fellow Wichita State University student, were attacked at an area Kwik Mart by a man yelling racial slurs and then chanting Trump’s name after first yelling racial slurs at a black customer.
“He was circling around saying, ‘Trump, Trump, Trump. We’ll make America great again. You guys are losers,’” Usama said, according to Wichita NBC affiliate KSN Channel 3 News.
The police report indicated that the person of interest, who is still at large, kicked the student’s vehicle, leaving “minor damage,” before attacking Usama.
“Wichita police are looking for a white male, in his 30s, 6 feet tall, 200 pounds,” Lt. James Espinoza told the station. “We’re also looking for an unknown make van that’s white in color with a gray bottom on it.”
The person in the van may be a witness, police said.
While Usama is calling this a hate crime, police indicated that they want to hear from all sides before they make that determination.
“This is being called a disturbance at this time,” says Lt. Jeff Gilmore with the Wichita Police Department. “We have no comment on whether this could be called a hate crime. We want to talk to all parties involved.”
The local chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations, known as CAIR, held a press briefing on the incident Monday.
