A much-debated final piece of video evidence displayed solely for those present in the courtroom left many drawing definitive conclusions where it concerned the alleged murderer of Charlie Kirk.
Friday marked the end of the five-day preliminary hearing in the case of Utah v. Tyler Robinson, the man alleged to have shot the Turning Point USA founder at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. The concluding moments of the hearing found Judge Tony Graf Jr. acquiescing to show State’s Exhibit 12.1 for those present, which witnesses report allegedly showed the defendant “TAKING THE SHOT.”
Counted among those present, podcaster Benny Johnson offered an account of what took place, detailing, “The Judge told the media to turn off all cameras and allowed the full ENHANCED footage of the murder to play. Every movement of Tyler Robinson that day captured in full quality HD. Zoomed in. Some footage in 4K. Tracking all his movements.”
“You can see crystal clear Tyler Robinson’s face, the license plate number on his vehicle, details of his clothing and his actions on the rooftop — and you can time every horrifying detail to the minute Charlie Kirk was murdered,” he added.
Likewise, in a post with accompanying video said to be a convoy escorting Robinson back to holding, independent journalist Nick Sortor expressed, “High-quality surveillance video has just been shown in court showing Tyler Robinson TAKING THE SHOT at Charlie Kirk. Robinson is SCREWED.”

While the defense routinely objected to admission of evidence throughout the week, the exhibit in question had been a source of much debate regarding the use of zooming on the footage and circles that had been added by unknown parties to highlight particular areas of the video.
Graf’s decision to allow the video to be played in the courtroom without publication followed arguments at the beginning of day 5 wherein the defense complained about a particular piece of evidence that had made its way to the internet. As a remedy, the judge determined to prohibit further display of evidence for the media and public audience.

Even after those present in the courtroom recounted what they had witnessed about movements up to, after, and including the moment that Kirk was shot, debate persisted over the specific claim being made about the video, citing corporate media sources and testimony about whether or not surveillance footage captured the shooting.
The exhibit wasn’t the only thing the public wasn’t privy to in the courtroom Friday as Johnson went on to describe the moment for the Kirk family, stating, “What the public couldn’t see was the emotion in the courtroom. Charlie’s family sobbing uncontrollably, Erika in Mrs. Kirk senior’s arms. Charlie’s father comforting them.”
“Just feet away sat a pale, lifeless emaciated Tyler Robinson who stared at the floor with no remorse as he listened to the weeping,” added the podcaster.
Meanwhile, as representation for Kirk’s family filed a motion seeking a ruling on probable cause “no later than September 1, 2026,” the next scheduled day for a hearing in the case, the family posted a statement via Erika Kirk’s social media that read, ‘The conclusion of the preliminary hearing marks an important step forward in the pursuit of justice for Charlie. Our family is grateful for the prayers, support, and kindness that has been extended to us, especially through these unimaginably painful and emotionally demanding proceedings.”
“As difficult as these last few days have been, it brings our family comfort to know that the world has witnessed the overwhelming evidence of what occurred to Charlie that day,” the family added. “Nothing will ever undo the loss of our beloved Charlie. As this case moves into its next phase, we pray the truth will continue to be heard through a process that is fair, transparent, and grounded in the facts.”
