A cabinet official’s take on Temporary Protected Status (TPS) found Fox News’ Tomi Lahren suspecting the GOP’s inaction on voter ID wouldn’t be unique in disappointing supporters.
Last week, as the Senate fled Washington, D.C. for another recess set to end the week of July 13, continued failure to get the SAVE America Act to President Donald Trump’s desk came with a Supreme Court success on TPS.
However, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin’s tempered talk on deportations was met with disappointment from the co-host of Fox News’ “The Big Weekend Show” as she asked, “Why do we elect Republicans?”
Sunday, she shared a clip of Mullin’s appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” with Jake Tapper beneath the caption, “So no voter ID and now mass deportations aren’t happening either. Why do we elect Republicans? Don’t be surprised when conservatives stay home in November. I’m not advocating for it, but I won’t be surprised.”

During the secretary’s appearance on CNN, discussion on the Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling favoring the Trump administration’s end of TPS for over 350,000 Haitians and Syrians had the former senator from Oklahoma rattling off options in addition to showing the non-citizens the door.
He told Tapper, “They can try to apply for a permanent residence here, they can apply for a temporary visa if they choose to, or they can choose to go back. And if they wanna go back, we’ll help them with that.”
As Mullin explained that application to remain in the United States didn’t mean the requests would be granted, New York Rep. Mike Lawler (R) had only days earlier reiterated his position for extended TPS for Haitians, citing concerns about a detrimental impact on the healthcare system said to employ “roughly 1/3” of Haitian TPS holders.
The congressman’s push included advancing the argument that the State Department’s travel advisory for Americans was proof that it would not be safe for Haitians to return to their own country.
When Tapper attempted to make the same case to the secretary, Mullin reminded the reporter that “do not travel is not for Haitians. That’s do not travel for the United States, cause they are kidnapping or trying to kidnap individuals from the United States because they feel like their family has the money to pay the ransom.”
He went on to add that there are advisories on numerous places where Americans vacation, “That doesn’t mean it’s a risk to the individuals that live there.”

Where it concerned the president, in addition to canceling the signing of a housing bill until the SAVE America Act made it through Congress, Trump indicated support for the job Mullin had done thus far at DHS by sharing a Breitbart News report on Truth Social where the secretary indicated “We’re on a path this year — ’26 — to well past what we did in ’25,” on deportations.
