Disney is politely telling enthusiastic partygoers to tone it down a notch when it comes to personalized decorations.
Decorating Disney cruise ship cabin doors has reportedly been a long-time tradition for travelers who are celebrating specific occasions.
Colorful magnets and displays to mark milestones like birthdays, anniversaries, reunions and honeymoons can also serve a dual purpose, as the bland, identical doors in long hallways can be hard to distinguish without a marker.
But the once-tasteful and fun marker has devolved for many into grandiose displays that swallow doors and even spill onto ceilings and hallways, Fox News Digital reported.
The growing trend prompted Disney to issue new guidelines for decorating doors.
“You are welcome to personalize your stateroom door with a tasteful magnetic sign for a celebration — or simply to add a touch of fun!” the cruise line stated on the “frequently asked questions” portion of its website, Fox reported.
It added the caveat: “decorations should only be placed on doors and are not permitted on corridor walls or ceilings.”
Passengers who damage doors will be fined $100 per incident to cover repairs.
Despite some guests pushing the limits, a Disney spokesperson told Fox News Digital that the tradition is here to stay.
The new guidelines were welcomed by many Disney customers.
“I appreciate people’s creativity, but only to a certain extent. The people who do full-blown displays, including a gallery wall of photos from prior cruises, are out of their minds,” one guest said on Reddit. “It’s getting out of hand and into fire hazard territory with some of these extensive displays,” they added.
“I love to decorate the door, but on our last cruise … some of the decorations were so extensive they made the hallways an obstacle course,” another cruiser said. “It was a nightmare with the wheelchair trying not to get caught on stuff,” the person added.
Elaborate and intrusive decorations can pose a fire threat, according to Royal Caribbean, which prohibits the use of personal decorations on doors and elsewhere.
While Carnival Cruise Line’s website states “decorations may consist only of fire retardant materials” — and adds that “no string lights of any kind are allowed.”
