Democrat lawmaker is mad DHS isn’t locking up enough white illegal immigrants

Democratic New Jersey Rep. LaMonica McIver got visibly angry Wednesday that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is not locking up enough white illegal aliens.

McIver accused Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin of racism because every illegal alien detained at Delaney Hall, an immigration detention center in Newark, New Jersey, is non-white. The congresswoman did not mention that over 80% of illegal immigrants in the U.S. are non-white.

“Secretary Mullin, you talk about racism a lot in today’s hearing. You know what’s racist? The fact that every detainee in Delaney Hall is a person of color,” McIver said. “The cruelty runs to the top of DHS, weaponizing the immigration system for your president and this administration’s racist grievances.”

Approximately 7% of illegal aliens come from Europe, Canada, and Oceania, according to the Migration Policy Institute. An overwhelming majority of 68% originated from Mexico and Central America, while 12% migrated from South America.

Police arrested hundreds of rioters outside of Delaney Hall, who claim detainees have faced inhumane conditions. Democratic New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherill blamed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents for allegedly attacking peaceful protesters and called on there to be better conditions for detainees.

“My number one priority will always be public safety, and I remain dedicated to protecting constitutional rights,” Sherrill said. “We simply cannot let ICE surge into our community. I do not know why these individuals attacked or what they wanted to accomplish, but I refuse to let these dangerous actions detract from New Jersey’s dedication to ensuring public safety, keeping people safe from ICE, and that the people detained inside Delaney Hall are treated with dignity.”

A federal grand jury indicted McIver in June 2025 for allegedly assaulting and interfering with federal law enforcement officers outside of Delaney Hall on May 9, 2025. McIver was accused of physically shoving and slamming her forearm into federal agents while she and other lawmakers attempted to conduct a congressional oversight visit during an immigration protest.

Prosecutors initially brought charges against McIver on May 19, 2025. She pleaded not guilty and accused the prosecution of being politically motivated. Judges have repeatedly declined to dismiss the charges.

“The charges against me are purely political — they mischaracterize and distort my actions, and are meant to criminalize and deter legislative oversight,” McIver said in May. “This administration will never stop me from working for the people in our district and standing up for what is right. I am thankful for the outpouring of support I have received, and I look forward to the truth being laid out clearly in court.”

If convicted, McIver could face a maximum of 17 years in prison, which consists of 8 years each on the first two counts, and one year for the additional interfering count, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ).
