More than a dozen protesters were arrested Sunday in protests outside a New Jersey immigration facility that brought confrontations with law enforcement over the weekend, multiple reports show.
Cops were seen with riot gear and shields fending off crowds around the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Delaney Hall detention facility over the weekend in Newark, according to news outlets and on-the-ground footage. Videos also captured demonstrators wearing what appeared to be gas masks in preparation for being gassed by police.

The crowd was in violation of a curfew order meant to crack down on unrest outside the facility, The New York Post reported. Other rioters set police barricades on fire the night before, according to footage from journalist Julio Rosas.
“The mass arrest bus is officially being LOADED here in Newark with rioters in their EXPENSIVE KITS being taken into custody,” journalist Nick Sortor said in a Sunday night X post showing footage. His video showed officers lining up multiple arrestees wearing face or gas masks in front of a police van. The Sunday night arrests rose to 20, the New York Post reported.
Officers deployed gas, pushed back, and hit protesters with a baton, footage from Middle East Eye showed. Some demonstrators in the outlet’s videos tried physically pushing back a line of shield-bearing officers to no avail.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) celebrated the Sunday night arrests in X posts, declaring “ZERO tolerance for rioters.” One clip from the agency showed officers swiftly dragging a man back from a sidewalk to behind the police line to arrest him.
“Don’t be this guy,” the DHS said in response to the video.
Delaney Hall’s inmate population has steadily risen in recent months despite liberal outcry, with the average daily head count rising from 234 in September to 807 in November, NJ Spotlight News reported. Another skirmish at Delaney Hall in May 2025 led to the indictment of Democratic New Jersey Rep. LaMonica McIver for allegedly assaulting and obstructing immigration officers while trying to enter. She has pleaded not guilty, the Associated Press reported.
