‘Rockets are hard’: Musk responds after spectacular Blue Origin rocket launch pad explosion

Elon Musk’s potential competition in reusable rockets went up in flames Thursday night after a magnificent explosion on the launch pad.

Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket, which is backed by Jeff Bezos, exploded Thursday night during a hot-fire test at a Space Force launch facility in Cape Canaveral, Florida — a hot-fire test involves firing the rocket engines while the unit is secured to the launch pad.

Musk, who heads up SpaceX, responded to the malfunction on his social media platform X, “Most unfortunate. Rockets are hard.”

Bezos responded to the failure in an X post, “All personnel are accounted for and safe. It’s too early to know the root cause but we’re already working to find it. Very rough day, but we’ll rebuild whatever needs rebuilding and get back to flying. It’s worth it.”

As seen above, Musk replied to Bezos’ post with the famous Latin phrase, “Ad astra per aspera,” which translates to “To the stars through hardships.”

The Brevard County Emergency Management office described the incident in a public notice as an “anomaly” which posed “no threat to the general public,” CNBC reported.

Blue Origin officials said in a brief statement that the company “experienced an anomaly during today’s hotfire test,” adding that it will continue to “provide updates as we learn more.”

The New Glenn rocket is named after John Glenn, the first American astronaut to orbit Earth. It was manufactured at a nearby factory on Merritt Island.

Social media users were quick to suggest that Bezos may want to let Musk handle the rocket business — here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story, as seen on X:
