In Clinton Hoax, Obama Coup: The Declassified Story of the Trump–Russia Delusion, Drew Thomas Allen delivers a devastating, meticulously researched indictment of one of the most corrosive political operations in American history. Far more than a simple recounting of the Russia collusion narrative, this book functions as a forensic restoration—much like the Leonardo Da Vinci underpainting that opens the narrative—stripping away decades of official varnish, media propaganda, and bureaucratic overpainting to reveal the raw blueprint of a calculated assault on the republic.
Allen begins where the rot truly started: Benghazi. On September 11, 2012, four Americans—including Ambassador Chris Stevens—were murdered in a coordinated terrorist attack by al-Qaeda-linked militants. Rather than confront the failure of Obama’s Libya policy or the reckless arming of jihadists that contributed to the chaos, the administration manufactured a lie.
They blamed an obscure YouTube video for a “spontaneous protest.” Susan Rice was dispatched to five Sunday shows to repeat the fiction. Obama himself echoed it on David Letterman. When the truth emerged—through cables, eyewitness accounts, and internal emails showing prior warnings ignored—the cover-up metastasized. The same machinery that sanitized Benghazi would later be deployed against Trump.
The connection is not coincidental. Benghazi forced investigations that exposed Hillary Clinton’s private email server and the pay-to-play scandals tied to the Clinton Foundation. By 2016, Clinton was drowning in scandal. Her campaign needed a diversion. Enter Fusion GPS, hired through Perkins Coie lawyer Marc Elias. They commissioned Christopher Steele, whose infamous dossier—filled with unverified claims of “golden showers,” Prague meetings, and a grand Trump-Russia conspiracy—became the scaffolding for the entire hoax.
Allen meticulously traces how this opposition research was laundered into official channels. The FBI, already aware from Russian intelligence intercepts in March 2016 that Clinton planned to “vilify” Trump by tying him to Russia, nevertheless opened Crossfire Hurricane in July. The predicate? Third-hand barroom gossip from George Papadopoulos via Australian diplomat Alexander Downer. The real fuel? The Steele dossier, funded by the Clinton campaign and DNC, presented to the FISA court with omissions and alterations so egregious that even the DOJ Inspector General documented seventeen significant errors.
The book excels in exposing the circular feedback loop. Fusion GPS fed Steele’s memos to the FBI while simultaneously shopping them to compliant journalists. Yahoo News ran stories based on the dossier; the FBI then cited those stories as “corroboration” in FISA applications.
It was a self-licking ice cream cone of disinformation. When the FBI fired Steele for leaking, they kept the pipeline open through Bruce Ohr, whose wife, Nellie, worked at Fusion GPS. The corruption was total.
But Allen’s most damning revelation centers on President Obama. This was never merely a “Clinton hoax.” It became an “Obama coup” the moment the president ordered the Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA) in December 2016, after Trump’s victory.
John Brennan, Obama’s CIA director, handpicked analysts from only three agencies and elevated a single ambiguous Russian intelligence fragment to claim Putin “aspired to help” Trump win. Contradictory reporting—showing Moscow expected a Clinton victory or was indifferent—was buried. The ICA transformed campaign dirt into official “intelligence,” providing the justification for years of investigations, leaks, and media hysteria.
The consequences were catastrophic. The Mueller investigation, launched in the shadow of the ICA, consumed Trump’s first two years in office. It wasn’t about finding collusion—there was none. It was about paralysis.
Cabinet officials operated under constant legal threat. Policy initiatives were delayed. Every tweet, firing, or meeting was spun as “obstruction.” Meanwhile, real crimes were ignored. Clinton’s email deletions using BleachBit after a congressional subpoena? No charges. The pay-to-play at the Clinton Foundation? Swept aside. The weaponization of intelligence itself? Protected by layers of classification until Tulsi Gabbard’s declassifications.
Allen’s narrative is relentless because the evidence is. He details how the same officials who dismissed Russian intelligence when it implicated Clinton elevated it when it could damage Trump. Kevin Clinesmith altered an email to renew the Carter Page FISA warrant. Peter Strzok and Lisa Page texted about stopping Trump while running the investigation. James Comey leaked memos to trigger the special counsel. Yet accountability has been nonexistent. Clinesmith received probation. Sussmann and Danchenko were acquitted in Washington, DC. The fish rots from the head, and under Obama, the rot spread throughout the Administrative Mafia.
What makes this book essential is Allen’s clarity: this wasn’t partisanship run amok. It was an attempted coup. The peaceful transfer of power—the crown jewel of the American republic—was deliberately undermined. For the first time, the full apparatus of the state was turned against a political opponent and then a sitting president. The long-term damage is incalculable. Trust in institutions collapsed. Polarization deepened. A precedent was set that the ruling class can weaponize “national security” to nullify elections.
Allen’s writing is accessible yet rigorous, blending the storytelling flair of a Renaissance tour guide with the precision of a prosecutor. He connects Benghazi to Russiagate to the lawfare of 2020-2024, showing the pattern of escalating deception. Each cover-up required a bigger lie. Benghazi demanded the video hoax. The email scandal demanded Russiagate. The desperation to stop Trump in 2024 demanded indictments, raids, and censorship.
The book closes with a sobering warning. The threat is not historical. The same forces—entrenched bureaucrats, media propagandists, and political operatives—remain embedded. Without full accountability, the cycle will repeat. Drew Thomas Allen doesn’t merely document history; he restores it, revealing the ugly underpainting beneath layers of official deception.
Clinton Hoax, Obama Coup is more than a book about 2016. It is a battle cry for transparency, accountability, and the restoration of the republic. Every American who values self-government should read it. The varnish has been stripped away. What remains is the truth—and a call to ensure such betrayal never happens again.
