Border czar Tom Homan questioned Democrats on Tuesday about their opposition to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act and their stance on election security and immigration enforcement.
Republicans back the SAVE America Act’s nationwide voter ID rules, while Democrats oppose the measure, calling it discriminatory. Appearing on “The Charlie Kirk Show,” Homan blasted Democrats’ rhetoric on voter access and immigration enforcement, saying their stance is inconsistent.
“Are illegal aliens voting? I mean, bottom line is, what are they afraid of? And they say illegal aliens don’t vote. Well, look, part of DHS’s job is secure elections, and I’m not gonna say what our plan is going forward, but if only U.S. citizens can vote, I don’t see the issue, what they’re concerned about,” Homan said. “They ought to be concerned about the safety and security of this nation. And why is the Department of Homeland Security [DHS] not funded? That’s what they need to explain.”
Homan blamed years of lax immigration enforcement for the surge of illegal crossings at the southern border.
“They can get angry at ICE all they want. You gotta remember, they set the stage, right? They baked this pie, right? They, four years of open borders, four years of no immigration enforcement. We had historic illegal immigration on the southern border. They knew it, and the members of Congress stood silent. They’re complicit. They didn’t do anything to [former DHS] Secretary [Alejandro] Mayorkas when he said under oath that the border’s secure, so they’re to blame for this,” Homan said. “And what ICE is simply doing is responding to four years of open borders and historic illegal immigration on the border that brought millions upon millions of people to the border and released in the United States. That requires a historic deportation operation.”
In March 2021, Mayorkas told multiple media outlets that “the border is secure” and “the border is closed.” He repeated similar statements on shows like Good Morning America and Meet the Press. Video clips also show him saying, “The border is secure, and the border is not open.”
Homan said that Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s expanded operations are a direct response to four years of lax immigration enforcement under previous administrations.
“It’s just simple math, so they gotta remember, why are we in this position? Why is ICE hiring more people? Why was President Trump elected to be the President of the United States and put in the Oval Office? To secure the border and enforce immigration law?” Homan added. “That’s what we’re doing, and they set the stage for the open borders for four years. They can’t forget that.”
The SAVE Act is a GOP‑backed election integrity measure to strengthen election security that would mandate proof of U.S. citizenship before registering to vote in federal elections. In April, the House approved the bill 216–213, with just a single Democrat voting with GOP members. The legislation would also require voters to present photo ID at polling places and would eliminate mail-only voter registration — steps that Republicans say are necessary to secure elections, though Democrats warn they could hinder participation by eligible voters.
Senate Democrats have actively blocked the bill, preventing it from moving forward despite its House approval. The measure remains stuck at the 60-vote threshold, which has stalled numerous conservative initiatives this Congress.
