Hoover Institution Senior Fellow Victor Davis Hanson on Wednesday shared an update about his health after doctors removed part of his lung while treating a rare form of cancer.
Hanson announced in December that he would undergo major surgery after doctors discovered what he called a “serious” health issue that had proven difficult to diagnose. Appearing on “The Ingraham Angle,” Hanson said he remains optimistic despite the diagnosis.
“I’m upbeat. You play with the cards that are dealt to you. So my attitude is that’s not going to come back, and if it does, I’ll do my best to keep working, but I’ve got to keep working, and I can’t think about it,” Hanson told host Laura Ingraham.
Hanson said the condition initially appeared as a lingering cough before doctors discovered the underlying illness.
“I had a problem all year with, they didn’t know what it was, a lung. I was probably coughing, and then it was a very rare non-smoker’s cancer. And they decided to take most of the right lung out, the right lower lobe, and it’s an aggressive cancer. It can come back, and it has a very strange mutation, so you can’t treat it with chemo or immunotherapy,” Hanson added.
Following his surgery, Hanson said he experienced a serious complication when internal bleeding developed after doctors successfully removed a cancerous tumor along with part of his right lung. He thanked supporters for their concern and explained that the post-operation aneurysm required additional medical attention during his recovery.
He has been recovering since the surgery, but admitted he still feels weak and continues to face lingering health issues that could require further treatment. In February, Hanson said a test came back negative, meaning he would not need chemotherapy in the near term.
