A Minneapolis daycare center mentioned in Nick Shirley’s video alleging widespread fraud in Minnesota has shut its doors, according to state licensing records.
The Quality ‘Learing’ Center closed on Tuesday after requesting the termination of its license from the Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families, according to the Minnesota Department of Human Services’ licensing records. State officials said the center cannot reopen without submitting a new license application.
“The provider is unable to reopen without reapplying for a license,” CBS News reported the agency as saying. State inspectors conducted the center’s most recent licensing review in June and cited several operational violations, but they reported no evidence of fraud at the time.
The closure follows Shirley’s YouTube video where he visited nearly a dozen Minnesota day care facilities and said they collected public funds while failing to provide services. The Quality ‘Learing’ Center appeared in the video after Shirley filmed the exterior sign, which initially contained a misspelling that operators later corrected.
KSTP reported that Minnesota regulators cited the Quality ‘Learing’ Center for 95 violations between 2019 and 2023. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson said on Dec. 18 that suspected fraud in Minnesota’s Medicaid program has surpassed $9 billion.
Several state employees accused Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz of engaging in “systemic” retaliation against whistleblowers who raised alarms at the same time federal prosecutors advanced multiple cases. Walz later said that Minnesota “attracts criminals” but urged the public not to demonize Somali residents.
