The latest looming deadline was met with indifference to public concerns as President Donald Trump committed to staying the course on securing a deal for TikTok.
Upon returning to the White House in January, Trump acted to utilize the one extension included in the 2024 law mandating divestment of the social media platform in the United States from its Chinese government-tied parent company, ByteDance. Now, with a second extension set to expire Thursday, the White House confirmed the president’s plan to delay until September so TikTok does not “go dark.”
In a statement provided to the media, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt expressed, “President Trump will sign an additional executive order this week to keep TikTok up and running.”
“As he has said many times, President Trump does not want TikTok to go dark. This extension will last 90 days, which the administration will spend working to ensure this deal is closed so that the American people can continue to use TikTok with the assurance that their data is safe and secure,” said Leavitt.
The press secretary’s statement followed a response from Trump aboard Air Force One as he returned to Washington, D.C., from the G7 Summit in Canada when asked about the potential for another extension.
“Probably, yeah,” the president said before adding, “Probably have to get China approval, but I think we’ll get it. I think President Xi will ultimately approve it.”
When President Donald Trump announced the second extension, tacking an additional 75 days onto the initial 90-day extension, he asserted, “My Administration has been working very hard on a Deal to SAVE TIKTOK, and we have made tremendous progress.”
Referring to the impact his economic policies were having on negotiations with China, the president went on, “We hope to continue working in Good Faith with China, who I understand are not very happy about our Reciprocal Tariffs (Necessary for Fair and Balanced Trade between China and the U.S.A!). This proves that Tariffs are the most powerful Economic tool, and very important to our National Security!”

“We do not want TikTok to ‘go dark.’ We look forward to working with TikTok and China to close the Deal,” added Trump.
Meanwhile, considering the national security concerns that led to the initial passage of the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act in April 2024 that called for the ban if a deal for U.S. investors to take control of operations stateside could not be secured, some voiced concerns about what a failure to enforce the law in this case meant with regard to other issues involving Chinese investment in the United States, like buying up land around military bases.
“We won’t even follow the law and ban TikTok or limit Chinese student visas. We aren’t seizing Chinese land in the US,” said Bonchie from Red State. “I’m not telling you how to feel about it. I’m just telling you to be eyes wide open about the situation.”
Likewise, Stephen L. Miller said, “The one thing Trump has acted like a King on is not enforcing the TikTok ban, which is, of course, the one thing Dems and the left are glad he’s not enforcing.”
