Suspect in second Trump assassination attempt pleads not guilty

Ryan Routh pleaded not guilty Monday after he was charged with attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump at his West Palm Beach, Florida golf club, according to multiple reports.

Routh, who was indicted for attempted assassination, assaulting a federal officer, and several gun charges, pleaded not guilty to all five counts, CBS News reported. A Secret Service agent noticed Routh’s rifle barrel behind a bush while Trump was golfing on Sept. 15, and Routh fled after the agent fired a shot in his direction, according to court records.

In court filings, prosecutors included a handwritten letter from Routh, which they said he left with another individual several months before the attempt, offering $150,000 to anyone who could “finish the job.”

“Dear World, this was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I am so sorry I failed you,” the letter released by the Department of Justice (DOJ) states. “I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster.”
