‘This is why you don’t let children choose their gender’

Why wouldn’t you let your child choose to permanently alter their body?

The answer seems obvious, of course. If you want to get nerdy, the prefrontal cortex does not finish developing until the mid- to late 20s, making it one of the very last parts of the brain and body to mature. This particular cortex handles things such as the regulation of thoughts, actions and emotions. For the purposes of psychotherapy, it has “been implicated in planning complex cognitive behavior, personality expression, decision making, and moderating social behaviour.”

Children and teens aren’t exactly famous for their forward-thinking and decision making, but for some reason there is an entire group of people who think they should be able to make life-changing medical decisions without the input of their parents based on how the child/teen in question is “feeling.”
