‘I don’t know what happened!’ Distressing scene when 12-yr-old girl cuffed for stabbing little brother to death

Back in January, a 12-year-old Oklahoma girl allegedly stabbed her 9-year-old brother, killing him. Months later, police bodycam footage of the aftermath has finally been publicly released to Law & Crime, a news media outlet.

According to a police report reviewed by Law & Crime, the situation erupted just before midnight on Jan. 5th when April Lyda’s 12-year-old daughter woke her up and said she’d stabbed her brother. Lyda then called the police.

The bodycam footage begins with Lyda’s daughter rushing down the stairs and exiting the home while sobbing, “I’m so sorry! I’m so sorry!”

Moments later, Lyda follows her outside screaming, “You better pray to God he f–king lives.”

Over the course of the next 25 minutes, Lyda’s daughter is taken into custody and processed.

At one point in the video, Lyda’s handcuffed daughter leads the officers to the knife, which she says she’d thrown out the second-story window.

“You used a knife?” Lyda asks in exasperation, prompting more apologies from her daughter.

At another point in the video, Lyda’s daughter is asked whether she has any cuts or injuries. She removes her hoodie and proceeds to show the officers a slew of cuts — many of which the officers note look old. This suggests Lyda’s daughter had been cutting herself.

Later in the video, Lyda’s daughter complains about the handcuffs, saying, “Are the handcuffs necessary? I’m a good child.”

Not once during the video did the daughter offer any motive or semblance of a motive as to why she’d stabbed her brother, Zander, who was reportedly rushed to a hospital but declared dead by 2:30 am the following morning. Instead, she kept saying she didn’t know what had happened — an excuse critics found to be unsatisfactory:

Following the incident, Lyda’s family and friends launched a GoFundMe for the family. The GoFundMe claims Lyda’s daughter was a good kid with no previous problems: “Her daughter was a well behaved child with no prior history of behavioral problems.”

The GoFundMe also provides a description of the deceased.

“Her son Zander was the sweetest boy who had the biggest smile, he loved to ride his bike, play fortnite, hang out with his best friend or just run errands with his mom. He loved spending time with his dad & grandma, going on trips with his family, and his favorite places was sky zone, incredible pizza and the children’s museum,” it reads.

“His favorite foods were cheese pizza, tacos and chocolate ice cream. He was a amazing son who would always do what he was told, with out hesitation, he wanted to make his mom proud, he loved his sister and brother very much and he will be missed every second of every single day,” it continues.

The GoFundMe notes that Lyda has a third child, a 3-year-old son and that she needs to take care of him. It also points to all the “many unexpected expenses” that have since emerged.

“April is a very independent person, and is still raising her 3 year old son as a single parent. She has trying to manage the many unexpected expenses that have come along with the aftermath of this terrible unexplainable incident,” it reads.

“The funds will be used for moving expenses to relocate her and her son to a new home, legal/attorney fees, an unexpected car repair as well as some monthly bills and living expenses until she is able to return to work full time. She will be very busy with many weekly counseling sessions, visitations and other meetings with their fantastic support team,” it continues.

The Tulsa Police Department has since confirmed to the Daily Mail that the girl is currently in custody with the Tulsa Police Child Crisis Unit. It’s not clear where she’s being housed, though the assumption is she’s in a juvenile detention facility.

Other than that, nothing is known about the daughter’s fate.

“The Tulsa Police Department [said] on Wednesday they are not making any comments on the case as it involves a juvenile and is under seal, per the District Attorney’s office,” according to the Daily Mail.

As for Lyda, she’s evidently upset that the bodycam footage has been released to Law & Crime.

“I seen the YouTube video, I don’t think it’s legal or appropriate for them to post that, so hopefully it will be taken down,” she wrote in a comment posted to the GoFundMe.

In the comment, Lyda also reveals that her daughter had been on medication.

“It’s looking like the medication definitely played a huge part in all this and that makes me so sick because I put her her back on it after taking her off for about 1-1/2 year after her being on it for so long, all the side effects makes sense now although at the time we didn’t know that they were side effects, she was treat as if they were separate issues,” the comment reads.
