IRS will still receive $60B thanks to debt ceiling deal and Republicans are not happy

Members of the House Freedom Caucus continued to decry House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) debt ceiling deal with President Joe Biden as a betrayal, facilitating “funding for the new Stasi.”

One of the key promises leading up to the 118th Congress was that the Republican majority would do away with the funding for 87,000 new IRS agents granted previously by the Democrats. Now, as the June 1 deadline nears for the debt ceiling, conservatives called out the reality of the current package that, among other things, still allows for the hiring of thousands of agents to seemingly act as secret police.

“The original House bill included elimination of all the IRS funding for the new Stasi, the IRS agents, who will be a weaponized IRS force,” Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs said Tuesday at a press conference on Capitol Hill referencing the Limit, Save, Grow Act passed in April. “Total savings would have been $71 billion.”

Instead, as his colleague from Georgia, Andrew Clyde, suggested, “Despite claims that this disastrous deal eliminated funding for Joe Biden’s auditing army of IRS agents, the bill tax doesn’t lie. In reality, the agreement cuts less than $1.4 billion. As a reminder, we promised the American people, the very first bill that this Republican Congress passed, that we would repeal the $80 billion that the Democrats appropriated to the already bloated IRS last year.”

“We promised the nation that this would be a top priority under a House Republican majority. This deal breaks those promises,” he added.

South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace added on social media, “A cut to the IRS doesn’t equal $80b in cuts to the IRS. Nor does it mean we are ‘gutting’ the IRS or its 87k new hires. Allegedly there will be $10b cut off top for 2024 during the [appropriations] process. But it’s also not in bill. That money can be cut anywhere the IRS decides.”

A side-by-side comparison of the previously passed House bill with the McCarthy-Biden deal suggested that the new proposal “Keeps 98% of IRS expansion & future IRS spending will be used to expand woke, weaponized bureaucracy.”

Further, it reportedly failed to reclaim unspent COVID funds, made no cuts related to the Democrats’ signature legislation, and did nothing to address border security.

Even the administration had touted about the deal: “We don’t believe in the near term that anything will need to change.”

“We think the IRS will continue to be able to effectuate its plans in the near term, and then there may be a need to come back to Congress and ask for additional funding,” a White House official said.

“It might be the case that, you know, in six, seven, eight years, there would be a need to come back and ask for more IRS funding, just as there was going to be need to do that after the 10-year window anyway. So we don’t think it’ll fundamentally change what the IRS does over the course of the next few years,” the official added.

Meanwhile, as conservative detractors continued to call out the House Speaker over the deal, including a threat of moving to vacate him from his position, McCarthy said he is “Not at all” worried about such a move.

“We know at any time when you sit and negotiate within two parties that you gotta work with both sides of the aisle. So, it’s not 100 percent of what everybody wants,” the California lawmaker argued, “but when you look, the country is going to be stronger. This is going to be transformational, where Congress is going to literally vote to spend less money this year than we spent last year.”
