Wedding bells may not ring after NY hotel cancels couple’s 30 reserved rooms to prepare for migrants

Wedding bells have been on the minds of Gary Moretti and Deanna Mifsud since they announced their engagement on Facebook in July 2021, but just weeks before they are set to tie the knot in Upstate New York, the hotel they booked for their guests announced they had canceled their 30 reserved rooms to make way for an influx of migrants.

The Florida couple is now on the hook for upwards of $20,000 as they race to find new rooms for their 160 guests.

“It was absolutely devastating,” Moretti told DailyMail.com. “It really just hit us hard, despite having contracts and thinking we were locked in – it’s disrespectful.”

The betrothed were bumped following the end of Title 42, as thousands of illegal immigrants rushed across the U.S. border with Mexico.

“It’s absolutely upsetting how they’re treating American people,” Moretti said. “How do tax-paying people have to deal with this?”

Moretti, who is originally from New York, and his Florida bride chose the breathtaking Lippincott Manor as the venue for their June 24 vows.

Just 20 minutes away, The Crossroads Hotel in Newburgh was a convenient spot to accommodate their friends, family, bridesmaids, and groomsmen.

When Moretti saw on the news that hotels in the region were taking in large groups of migrants, he says he wanted to confirm his guests were taken care of.

“I had to find out myself,” he explained. “I called the management company because I was concerned about my bookings, and they just told me: ‘You don’t have to be concerned, because it’s all canceled.'”

“They were so disrespectful,” he added, “they just played it off like it was nothing.”

Wedding guests were traveling from California, Florida, Arizona, Minnesota, and New Jersey, and, a mere month before the big day, it was on him to tell them their hotel had been canceled.

“None of the guests were notified,” Moretti said. “If we hadn’t sought it out, they might never have told us.”

Mifsud and Moretti can thank New York City Mayor Eric Adams for their wedding day woes.

As ABC7 reported, 61,000 migrants have landed in the Big Apple, and it was Adams who pushed to send them to hotels in Rockland and Orange counties. The Crossroads is located in the latter.

The counties have pushed back against the mayor’s plan, and Orange County issued an executive order prohibiting hotels from being used as long-term residences.

Rockland County on Thursday was granted “a temporary restraining order against New York City and Mayor Eric Adams, prohibiting the city proceeding with its plan to turn the Armoni Inn and Suites in Orangeburg into a shelter for 340 migrants,” according to ABC7.

“Last night, both the State and City assured the Town of Newburgh and Orange County that no buses with asylum seekers would be here until further notice,” Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus said. “The process has been a disorganized disaster and the blame lies with the Mayor of New York, who originally opened the door for as many undocumented immigrants as possible to his self-proclaimed sanctuary city, and the Governor. She has sat back and done nothing as this crisis has negatively impacted New York State.”

“The New York State Police, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, the Supervisor of the Town of Newburgh and his police department were not notified that these buses would be arriving today,” he continued. “Sadly, we have learned that you cannot trust the word of New York City’s Mayor and the leadership of New York.”

As a result, DailyMail.com reports, “The Crossroads Hotel just days earlier booted more than a dozen homeless veterans from their rooms to make way for the migrant influx.”

“The way they approached it – including the homeless veterans – it just blows my mind,” Moretti said of his former home. “Everything I knew of New York is destroyed.”
