Exotic dancers greet Kamala Harris as she arrives in Africa – can visit reboot VP’s trajectory?

Vice President Kamala Harris will have another opportunity to showcase her leadership skills on a trip to Africa where she is spearheading the Biden administration’s efforts to shore up relations with African leaders at a time of growing Chinese influence on the continent.

On Sunday, the veep arrived in Ghana along with her husband, high-powered entertainment industry lawyer Douglas Emhoff, as the second gentleman accompanies his embattled spouse on what will be a three-nation tour, Harris’ latest chance to show that she is up to her very important job and that she is capable of rising to the occasion as the person who is only a heartbeat away from the presidency.

The powerful couple was given a royal welcome by the locals after touching down as exotic dancers adorned in flamboyant traditional dress turned out to greet her on the tarmac as they deplaned from Air Force II and she delivered remarks as the highest ranking member of the Biden regime to pay a visit to the region.

“I’m very excited about the future of Africa,” Harris said, noting that 19 years old was the average age in Africa. “That tells us about the growth of opportunity, of innovation, of possibility — I see in all of that a great opportunity not only for the people of this continent but the people of the world.”

“We are looking forward to this trip as a further statement of the long and enduring very important relationship and friendship between the people of the United States and those who live on this continent,” the vice president said as she will use billions of dollars to counter the efforts of Beijing to gain a foothold on the “dark continent,” a resource-rich prize for the communist global superpower.

“It’s my great honor to be on the continent of Africa – first here in Ghana, then to Tanzania and Zambia,” Harris tweeted on Sunday. “I look forward to meeting with leaders, young people, and entrepreneurs as we work together to invest in the innovation and ingenuity across the continent.”

VP Harris also marked the occasion by posting a number of images from the first day of her visit on Twitter.

“My weeklong trip to the continent of Africa is in recognition that African nations are critical to global prosperity and security — and their ideas and innovations will benefit the world,” Harris wrote of her special mission.

The vice president’s trip comes at a time of reports that her boss, President Joe Biden, has been grumbling that his hand-picked hasn’t been “rising to the occasion” by taking things “off of his plate,” a growing concern as the octogenarian career politician gears up for what is likely to be a grueling reelection campaign, possibly a rematch with Republican frontrunner and former President Donald J. Trump.

According to a recent Reuters report that cites former White House officials, the nation’s 46th president may be experiencing some buyer’s remorse over his choice of Harris to be his running mate, a sop to Congressional Black Caucus kingpin Rep. James Clyburn (R-SC) who saved his bacon during the primaries and who was among those expressing that anyone with the exception of a black woman be immediately ruled out for the bottom half of the Democratic party’s presidential ticket.

“A point of tension in their relationship is that I don’t think that the president sees her as somebody who takes anything off of his plate,” an unnamed former White House official is quoted by the outlet, adding that “fear of messing up” has been a contributor to Harris being “late to the game” on issues of importance.

The three-nation trip to Africa will be an effort for Harris to reboot perceptions after previous visits by administration officials with U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, First Lady Jill Biden, and Secretary of State Antony Blinken who have all preceded her with President Biden set to visit sometime later this year.
