NJ school superintendent resigns in disgrace after smearing bullied student, 14, who took her own life

A New Jersey school superintendent who smeared a bullied 14-year-old girl who’d committed suicide days earlier has since resigned in disgrace.

“Central Regional School District Superintendent Triantafillos Parlapanides resigned a day after the Daily Mail published comments from him that appear to divulge information on the private life of a 14-year-old student who died by suicide this past week,” the Asbury Park Press confirmed Saturday.

As previously reported, 14-year-old Adriana Kuch committed suicide several days after four of her fellow Central Regional High School students viciously attacked her, and two days after a video of the altercation went viral on the Internet.

“The video showed girls throwing a drink at the teen, then kicking and dragging her down school hallways. They pushed Adriana into red lockers lining the school hallways and one of the girls in a pink shirt punched Kuch repeatedly,” CBS News reported.

“Another girl outside of the video frame laughed as she recorded the scene. Two adults came in to break up the attack, with one adult pulling the teens apart. Adriana lay hurt and bruised on the hallway floor as the adult tried to help her up.”

Speaking with the Daily Mail via email days later, Parlapanides seemingly sought to blame her death on both her alleged drug use and her father’s alleged “affair” with the woman who later became her stepmother.

“After [Adriana’s] mother’s suicide since her father was having an affiar [sic] at the end of her 6th grade … Her father married the woman he had an affair with and moved her into the house. Her grades and choices declined in 7th and 8th grade,” he wrote.

“We offered her drug rehab and mental services on 5 occasions but father refused every time. We tried helping her several time but mother’s suicide was a major reason she started making poor choices,” he added.

The stunning words prompted massive backlash, including from Kuch’s father, who reportedly called Parlapanides a “piece of s–t.”

Meanwhile, students at Central Regional High School began protesting against Parlapanides’ “shocking lack of sensitivity,” as well as against the overall school administration, which they accused of having failed to protect Kuch.

“Danielle Ledesma said she didn’t know Adriana[.] [H]owever, [she] spoke to what some members of the community have called a systemic issue of bullying and lack of action from school staff,” the Daily Mail reported.

“Holding a sign that reads ‘I doubt that[,]’ Danielle [said] that it wasn’t the first time the school didn’t take action after a student approached them for help,” the Daily Mail added.

“My sign is the response from the superintendent when my friend said that she got sexually assaulted in Central Regional High School,” she told the outlet.

“I’ve been severely bullied throughout my entire life,” she added, explaining that she’s “been having panic attacks in the school on a daily basis” because of the bullying she herself experiences.

“It got to the point where I now have all of these meltdowns, all of these crying fits, panic attacks, whatever it may be, more than 5-6 times a day. Every single time that I have one at the school, they do absolutely nothing,’ she continued.

According to Jennifer O, a parent of another Central Regional High School student, even the teachers themselves took part in the bullying.

As for the four girls involved in Kuch’s attack, all four have been suspended and criminally charged.

“One juvenile is charged with aggravated assault, two juveniles are charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and one juvenile is charged with harassment,” CBS News confirmed Friday.

Kuch’s father believes his daughter’s suicide could have been prevented had the school taken action instead of doing virtually nothing, thus allowing the bullies to post the video of the attack to the Internet.

“If they called the police and did an investigation, those girls would not have posted videos from school,” he said.

He also said that the school should have taken his daughter to the hospital instead of just the school nurse.
