Meet Taho, an adorable puppy who almost lost his life on Monday when a criminal suspect threw him out of his car window during a police chase in Minnesota.

The story begins around 11:00 pm Monday night when deputies with the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office began pursuing a stolen vehicle as per a 911 call in which the caller reported that a person had been shot.

“The suspects, who were believed to have just shot someone, refused to stop. While deputies gave chase, the suspects attempted to carjack another victim, who had pulled over to the side of the road,” the department later reported in a Facebook post.

“A gun was displayed by the suspects in this attempted carjacking. This carjacking was thwarted as deputies, in their patrol vehicle with lights and siren activated, quickly caught up,” the Facebook post update continued.

However, the suspects reportedly continued to refuse to stop, choosing instead to start driving on the wrong side of Interstate 694.

What happened next will forever be remembered in the annals of dirtbag history.

“As deputies followed the suspects, the passenger’s side back door quickly opened. A deputy yelled, ‘Watch for a gun!’ and quickly positioned themselves and their squad out of the line of fire,” the Facebook post continues.

“From the open door, the suspects threw something out of the stolen vehicle. A white object hit the freeway and rolled into the lanes of traffic,” according to the department.

That white object was poor ol’ Taho!

“Upon further investigation, including review of in-car camera video, deputies determined the white object thrown into traffic by the carjacking suspects was a puppy,” the department reported in its Facebook post.

“The following morning, deputies launched a search effort and found the puppy, alive and hiding in the snow. He was located along the side of the freeway about 50 yards from where he was thrown from the stolen vehicle,” it added.

Taho, who’s reportedly under a year old, was subsequently rushed to an emergency veterinarian with a broken leg and other injuries. He was also given the “temporary name” of Taho, which evidently isn’t his real name.

According to the department, Taho will remain in police custody and be fostered by one of its employees. As for the criminal suspects, the authorities eventually used a “pursuit intervention technique” on the stolen vehicle to stop it.

Two suspects fled and remained loose, while two remained in the vehicle and were arrested. Ultimately, it turned out that nobody had been shot.

The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Foundation is now accepting donations to cover Taho’s medical costs, according to local station KMSP.

“The treatment has totaled $4,500, but it’s expected to reach up to $7,500,” the station reported.

Sadly, throwing innocent animals out of moving-car windows is a relatively commonplace criminal pastime.

Four years ago in California, for example, a man was charged with animal cruelty after he pulled the same stunt.

“The chase ensued when suspect Skyler Gregory allegedly failed to yield during a routine traffic stop Sunday morning on Mandel Road, near White Pines, according to a sheriff’s office news release. The suspect, driving a white Lexus, accelerated away from the deputy and continued at a high rate of speed westbound on Highway 4, forcing several other drivers out of the roadway,” the Calaveras Enterprise reported.

“The suspect allegedly threw a dog out of the driver’s side window while turning onto Avery Sheep Ranch Road. The dog, a ‘pit bull type’ breed, was ‘able to scurry off the road,’ though authorities have no additional information regarding its whereabouts or who it belongs to,” the paper added.

It’s not clear what happened to the dog.

Something similar happened in Los Angeles another two years earlier, albeit with a much happier ending.

This time a pursuit began when Los Angeles police ran a license plate check on a white, two-door Honda and discovered that it’d been stolen.

“When officers tried to pull the driver over, he took off and got into the Santa Clarita Valley, traveling at speeds in excess of 100 mph in light traffic on the northbound 14 Freeway,” according to local station KNBC.

“The driver got off the freeway and drove into a Palmdale neighborhood, where he swung the door open and tossed out a small white dog as he made a turn into a dead end street,” the station added.
