California dad-of-two mowed over then stabbed to death on street by mad man allegedly yelling ‘white privilege’

A deranged and perhaps racist Orange County, California man struck a bicyclist with his white Lexus sedan on Wednesday and then proceeded to turn around, exit his vehicle, and stab the victim to death.

The stabbing of Providence Mission Hospital emergency room doctor Michael Mammone, 58, occurred as the suspect, identified as 39-year-old accountant Vanroy Evan Smith, allegedly yelled racial, anti-white slurs.

“ABC7 spoke with a neighbor who declined to be interviewed on camera. She said her family heard what sounded like a ‘gunshot’ before the attack. When they ran outside, she said, they heard the suspect uttering racial slurs about ‘white privilege,'” local station KABC reported.

According to Orange County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Sgt. Michael Woodruff, Smith was stopped by witnesses who took “brave, heroic actions,” though sadly, Mammone did not survive.

The police have thus far established “no known relationship” between Mammone and Smith, Woodruff said. There’s also “no known motive” for the crime.

“We are stunned by this devastating tragedy. The entire Mission Hospital family is grieving over the loss of an incredible physician and friend,” Providence Mission Hospital, based in Laguna Beach, said in a statement.

“We will honor Dr. Mammone’s dedication to our community and passion for medicine by continuing to provide exceptional care,” the statement continued.

“That’s the irony of this whole thing. If a patient was brought in his condition, he would have done everything he could to save that person. He has saved so many lives here, and he died very close to where he saved hundreds of lives,” cardiologist Dr. Dawn Aatwal added.

Mammone reportedly leaves behind a wife, who works as a nurse, and two sons.

Several somewhat similar incidents have occurred in the past month.

Over in Cedar Rapids, Colorado, a black mother of three was stabbed to death by her neighbors last month after an argument spiraled out of control and racial slurs were uttered.

“Devonna Walker, 29, died after a heated altercation with her neighbors on Jan 2. Local activists contend her killing was racially motivated and question why the person who stabbed her is not in jail,” The Des Moines Register reported.

“A man and a woman were taken into custody and released the same day of the incident, officials have said. Activists say that includes a white man who is seen on cell phone video calling Walker a racial slur and minutes later, stabbing Walker after she pushed down a woman she was arguing with and lunged at him,” the station added.

Over at Indiana University, an 18-year-old female student was non-fatally stabbed in the head last month in an unprovoked attack that officials described as “racially motivated.”

“The student, an 18-year-old woman who was not publicly identified, was waiting for the Bloomington Transit bus’s doors to open at 4:45 p.m. when she was stabbed in the head several times. … After the attack, another bus passenger followed the suspect on foot and helped officers detain the person, Billie R. Davis, 56, of Bloomington, the police said,” The New York Times reported.

“Ms. Davis was charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery and battery with a deadly weapon, according to court documents. Video footage from inside the bus revealed that Ms. Davis and the victim had not interacted before the attack,” according to the Times.

Over in Texas meanwhile, late last month suspect Patrick Crusius announced his intention to plead guilty to hate crimes for killing 23 people and injuring 23 others in a racially motivated mass shooting against Mexicans that occurred at a Walmart four years ago.

His announcement came a couple of days after the Biden Department of Justice announced its own intention to not seek the death penalty against him.

“The prosecutors’ decision could be a defining moment for the Justice Department, which has sent mixed signals on policies regarding the federal death penalty that President Joe Biden pledged to abolish during his presidential campaign,” the Associated Press noted.

“Biden is the first president to openly oppose the death penalty and his election raised the hopes of abolition advocates, who have since been frustrated by a lack of clarity on how the administration might end federal executions or whether that’s the objective.”
