The frontlines in the battle for public education are currently in Florida, where Gov. Ron DeSantis is pushing back hard against the use of schools to advance a hard-left agenda.
The fevered resistance seen from progressive Democrats may be the best indication yet that they truly understand that their political future is dependent on controlling schools to indoctrinate today’s youth. At the same time, public schools are failing students now more than ever, with STEM classes (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) taking a back seat to social justice and LGBTQ+ issues.
With more and more parents opting to pull their children out of public schools, where fighting and bullying are often rampant, there is an effort on the left to sell this failure over private schools, charter schools, and homeschooling. A case in point is Diane Ravitch, a New York University professor, who said in a tweet Friday, “The best choice is your local public school. It welcomes everyone. It unifies community. It is the glue of democracy.”

Of course, the real concern on the left is the flow of dollars into public education, funding that ultimately feeds the powerful teachers’ unions, who in turn influence the Democratic Party.
But in Ravitch’s case, she didn’t count on Christina Pushaw, the rapid response director for Gov. DeSantis, to call out her hypocrisy. Turns out, the former professor sent her own children to private school.
“Why didn’t you send your sons to your local public school? You didn’t want the best for them? So you paid for private school in NYC? Make it make sense,” Pushaw tweeted.
But there would be no mea culpa from Ravitch, who served as Assistant Secretary of Education under President George H. W. Bush. Only making matters worse, she fired back, “I paid for it. I didn’t ask taxpayers to pay for my private choice.”
I paid for it. I didn’t ask taxpayers to pay for my private choice.

This prompted Pushaw to counter, “So what about parents who can’t afford to pay for private school but want to make the best choice for their kids? They don’t deserve the same opportunities as your sons?”
The DeSantis aide would then mock Ravitch for the contradiction — sending her children to private schools while claiming public schools were superior:
Behold, the logic of a liberal. “I paid for my sons to go to private school because it’s the worst choice. It excludes the poors. It un-glues democracy.” pic.twitter.com/ty9aJC8rRV

Getting to the root of the matter, Ravitch’s latest book says it all: “Slaying Goliath: The Passionate Resistance to Privatization and the Fight to Save America’s Public Schools.”
At the same time, it may be a while before Ravitch can show her face outside her liberal circles after getting so thoroughly owned by Pushaw.
Here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story from Twitter:
“F the poors.” — liberals

Wow. She maybe should not have tweeted on this issue at all.
— Jim Stinson (@jimstinson) January 31, 2023
She can’t even argue. She said it was “the best choice,” period. The issue has nothing to do with taxpayer dollars. We’re asking why she wouldn’t have chosen what she herself says is the best option
