The El Paso Sector Border Patrol agents thwarted a jaw-dropping 49 incidents of human smuggling, resulting in the arrest of nearly 300 migrants — last week — in Texas and New Mexico.
Three of the nearly 50 smuggling interdictions were highlighted by Border Patrol officials, Breitbart reports.
While patrolling along U.S. Highway 62/180 in Texas on January 9, Ysleta Station Border Patrol agents came upon a pickup in which several people were trying to hide, according to a statement given to Breitbart Texas.
After stopping the truck and inspecting it for immigrants, agents discovered seven of the passengers were Mexican nationals who lacked the authorization to be in the States. They were promptly screened and expelled to Mexico under Title 42, the Trump-era policy that restricted the number of asylum seekers who could enter the U.S. during the COVID pandemic.
The driver, also a Mexican national, was arrested and charged with human smuggling.
The very next day, Deming Station agents “thwarted multiple smuggling schemes– all in one day!” the El Paso Sector posted on Facebook. “Agents first encountered 6 vehicles utilized to smuggle migrants into the #US. Later in the day, two more schemes were foiled involving two U.S. Citizens drivers.”
In the six vehicles were 38 smuggled people, including unaccompanied minors, hailing from such places as Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico, according to the statement to Breitbart Texas.
All six drivers were Mexican citizens and are now facing federal charges of Conspiracy to Transport migrants.
In another case, a suspicious black SUV was stopped by Deming Station agents along New Mexico State Road 26 with another 8 migrants from Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico hiding inside. Among them was one unaccompanied child.
The driver, a legal permanent resident of the United States, was arrested and charged with conspiracy to transport. Those who were eligible were sent to Mexico under Title 42, and the rest were transported to the El Paso Central Processing Center for Title 8 processing.
In a statement, El Paso Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Peter Jaquez accused the smugglers of having “no regard for human life.”
“Transnational Criminal Organizations continue to recklessly endanger the lives of the migrants they smuggle for their own financial gain and with no regard for human life,” he said. “Human smuggling is a federal crime and the El Paso Sector will continue to work diligently with our U.S. Attorney partners in the West Texas District and the State of New Mexico to prosecute smugglers that endanger and exploit migrants.”
“Officials report that during FY22, which ended on September 30, 2022, arrests by El Paso Sector agents led to 642 prosecutions of human smuggling-related charges,” Breitbart reports. “During the first two months of FY23, arrests led to 141 cases.”
Overall, as BizPac Review reported earlier this month, the sheer volume of immigration cases has swamped the courts.

For the first time ever, there is a backlog in immigration courts of more than two million cases.
Former Border Patrol Chief Rodney Scott placed the bulk of the blame on President Joe Biden’s doorstep.
“Several factors have contributed to this backlog,” he told Just the News, “but the massive increase that we’re seeing today can be directly attributed to the Biden administration’s border and immigration policies.”
