Mexico’s far-left president praised President Joe Biden on Tuesday for being the “first” U.S. president” to not erect any more of the southern U.S. border wall.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador offered the praise while speaking at the 10th North American Leaders’ Summit in Mexico City.
“You, President Biden, you are the first president of the United States in a very long time that has not built, not even one meter of wall. And that we thank you for that, sir, although some might not like it, although the conservatives don’t like it,” he said.

He was correct about conservatives not liking this one bit. Indeed, conservatives responded to his praise by noting that he was effectively praising Biden for being America’s “first”-ever “America last” (and arguably Mexico first) president.

Backhanded insult from AMLO. The world does not respect Biden.

Of course he’s thanking him. All the illegals send U.S. dollars back home to pour into their economy. I wouldn’t exactly take that as a compliment.

No wall means immigrants can pass through his country smoothly. So from Mexico’s perspective its exactly what they want. Don’t have to spend on their southern border and can just pass along humans past ours.

Mexico is just transporting millions of illegals from their southern border to our southern border. Of course he thanks Biden for not building a wall. Imagine if Mexico actually had to deal with this invasion in their country.

However, “fact-checkers” were quick to note that Obrador’s statement was not entirely correct.
What’s true is that President Biden had vowed on the campaign trail that, as president, he would construct no more border wall structures.
“There will not be another foot of wall constructed in my administration,” he’d said in August of 2020.

Once in office, he doubled down on this vow, prompting the first round of praise from Obrador.
“One of Biden’s first executive orders was to halt work on the wall, which had been one of former President Donald Trump’s first campaign promises. … At his regular news briefing Friday, Mexico’s president told reporters he supports Biden’s decision, saying in the past, U.S. presidents from both parties had worked on the border wall,” Voice of America reported at the time.
But what’s also true is that Biden somewhat reneged on his promise this past summer.
“The Biden administration on Thursday authorized completion of the Trump-funded U.S.-Mexico border wall in an open area of southern Arizona near Yuma, where four wide gaps make it among the busiest corridors for illegal crossings,” NBC News reported at the time.
“The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that the work to complete the project near the Morelos Dam will better protect migrants who can get hurt slipping down a slope or drown walking through a low section of the Colorado River,” the outlet added.
And so, he did complete some of his predecessor’s wall — though it should be stressed that he did so not to make the border more secure, but to make life easier for the throngs of illegal aliens who’re trying to cross into the U.S.
Aside from this tiny act, the president has done virtually nothing to secure the border. Instead, he’s rolled back all of his predecessor’s successful policies, thus transforming the southern border into an unsecured, open passage into the United States.
In fact, this week he even somewhat admitted that’s the goal.
“We’re trying to make it easier for people to get here — opening up the capacity to get here,” he said on Tuesday.
Listen:
He specifically meant making it easier to apply for asylum, but that’s the problem. The easier the president makes it for illegal aliens to be granted entry into the U.S., the more he incentivizes further groups of illegal aliens into trying to cross over.
It’s been a repeat cycle for two years that’s resulted in more illegal aliens crossing over the border than at any previous time in American history.
For the fiscal year that ended in September 2022, a total of 2,378,944 illegal aliens were intercepted, which is the highest for any year ever on record.
