Cori Bush calls Rep. Byron Donalds a ‘prop’ who perpetuates ‘white supremacy’ despite being black

The House is in chaos as Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) continues to fail to garner enough votes to crown him Speaker, prompting some conservative lawmakers to float Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) as an alternative and his opponents on the other side of the aisle to attack the man with racist smears.

Donalds’ nomination by Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) earned a standing ovation from both sides of the chamber after Roy noted that having two black candidates for House Speaker — the other being Democratic Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) — was a historic moment for the United States.

Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) disagreed in the most offensive of ways on Wednesday, tweeting that Donalds, a fellow African American, is nothing but a “prop” who perpetuates “white supremacy.”

“FWIW [For What It’s Worth], @ByronDonalds is not a historic candidate for Speaker,” she stated. “He is a prop. Despite being Black, he supports a policy agenda intent on upholding and perpetuating white supremacy.”

“His name being in the mix is not progress—it’s pathetic,” she spewed.

The ever-divisive Joy Reid dismissed Donalds’ nomination on Wednesday’s MSNBC broadcast of “The ReidOut” as a “troll” move by Roy, of which the Florida lawmaker was a willing participant.

“Their plan is to just keep switching from alternative to alternative,” she said. “They first tried to go with Jim Jordan, but Jim Jordan is in with McCarthy. And today they did this sort of, not in a surprising move, went with a black guy with Chip Roy standing up and saying all sorts of things about Martin Luther King quotes and some of them were talking Frederick Douglass.

“This to me felt like a full troll and this guy was willing to go along with it,” she continued. “So now that they’ve done that, maybe tomorrow they’ll come up with a different person and have a whole new theme of a person that’s not Kevin McCarthy.”

Meanwhile, in an impromptu press conference following the fifth vote on Wednesday, Donalds said whether he stays in the race or drops out is “up to” McCarthy, according to the Daily Mail.

“I really never came here to try to be in leadership. I didn’t come to DC being interested in becoming Speaker of the House,” Donalds, who voted for himself in all three of Wednesday’s rounds, revealed to reporters. “But I also understand that, you know, part of my responsibility is to make sure that our conference gets to a point where we are doing the things in an effective and constructive way.”

Originally a supporter of McCarthy, Donalds said the struggling lawmaker’s fight isn’t over yet, but he stopped short of saying McCarthy should step aside.

“I don’t think we’re there at this point,” Donalds told reporters. “I think there’s a lot of members in the chamber who want to have serious conversations about how we can bring this all, you know, to a close. But I’m not going to speak for Kevin, and that’s something that he and his team got to figure out.”

On Tuesday, Donalds urged his colleagues to “come to a consensus.”

“The reality is Rep. Kevin McCarthy doesn’t have the votes. I committed my support to him publicly and for two votes on the House Floor. 218 is the number, and currently, no one is there,” he tweeted. “Our conference needs to recess and huddle and find someone or work out the next steps, but these continuous votes aren’t working for anyone.”

“When the dust settles, we will have a Republican Speaker, now is the time for our conference to debate and come to a consensus,” he continued. “This will take time, Democracy is messy at times, but we will be ready to govern on behalf of the American people. Debate is healthy.”

Following a brief break from the battle on Wednesday, the House floor descended into a full-blown brouhaha, with both Democrats and Republicans screaming over the top of each other during a voice vote to decide whether they’ve all had enough for the night.

Earlier in the day — and after 20 Republican lawmakers derailed his victory — McCarthy had indicated he would prefer to end the day’s session so that more negotiations could take place.

It was the Democrats who wanted to remain on the floor.

After the voice vote was inconclusive, Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Calif.) — the Dems’ new No. 3 — called for individual votes to be cast.

“At one point, DailyMail.com observed progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in an intense conversation with conservatives like Matt Gaetz and Paul Gosar,” the outlet reports. “But in the end, she was one of the Democrats hollering for the House clerk to allow more time for their members to race onto the floor and cast their votes.”

Ultimately, only five Republicans voted with the Democrats to continue working:  Reps. Andy Biggs (Ariz.), Lauren Boebert (Colo.), Eli Crane (Ariz.), Bob Good (Va), and Matt Gaetz (Fla.), who recently said he’s still a “firm no” when it comes to McCarthy.

Even former President Donald Trump’s support of the embattled Californian has failed to sway McCarthy’s detractors.

“President Trump has been in that position for several months. Knowing President Trump, he doesn’t change his mind,” Donalds told the press. “That’s all well and good, but the members are going to decide this process. And you know, that’s, that’s no disrespect at all to President Trump. That’s just the reality of the House.”
