Never-Kevin conservatives dig in while McCarthy allies vow not to vote for anyone else

With the fate of Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s leadership role in the new GOP House majority soon to be decided, both supporters and adversaries of the California Republican’s bid to replace Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House are digging in as the critical vote rapidly approaches.

A Friday letter circulated by the GOP House Main Street Caucus which boasts more than 70 members vowed to “hold the line” for “Speaker-Designate” McCarthy.

“McCarthy is best prepared to lead the 118th Congress, and we are prepared to vote for him for as long as it takes,” said the caucus in the letter that was obtained and published by Politico.

McCarthy’s leadership capabilities have faced serious questions after the midterm election debacle when the predicted “red wave” failed to materialize despite the ruinous policies of President Joe Biden and his Democrats, instead only registering as a mere trickle that resulted in a razor-thin majority for Republicans leading the current House Minority Leader’s critics to blame his feckless style of management for the hugely disappointing results.

The caucus also resorted to threats in its letter, saying that it would not support any rule changes if McCarthy isn’t coronated, a promise that if followed through on would almost certainly bolster the spirits of Democrats.

“We won’t reward chaos. Any RMSC support for rule changes will be taken off the table if Kevin McCarthy is not expediently elected as Speaker of the House on January 3,” the one-page letter reads.

The letter was signed by Reps. Dusty Johnson of South Dakota and Stephanie Bice of Oklahoma, the leaders of the Main Street Caucus.

Meanwhile, Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona, who is McCarthy’s top opponent for the coveted position, strongly emphasized that he will not vote for the “Speaker-Designate” under any circumstances.

Congressman Biggs appeared on Fox News where he responded to a question from “America’s Newsroom” anchor Rich Edson on whether he could be swayed to change his mind.

“I don’t think so,” he said. “Here’s why. He’s got a body of work. You go back to ’17 and ’18, look at why we had Democrats voting for the Republican budgets. Because Republicans didn’t want those budgets, but the floor leader, Mr. McCarthy, cut those deals with the Democrats. President Trump signed those budgets, but he said they were the worst budgets ever and he was probably right until the later budgets we have seen from the Democrats.”

In a previous letter to GOP lawmakers dated December 7, the Main Street Caucus wrote:

Americans on ‘Main Street’ and throughout our nation have experienced a striking decline in their quality of life under divisive, unresponsive Democrat rule in Congress. These families and businesses have a firsthand understanding of how dysfunctional governing in DC directly causes crises at home–whether it’s inflation, mandates, crime, or overseas threats. Now, our constituents demand viable solutions focused on lowering costs across the board, maximizing economic growth and opportunity, fiscal responsibility, safety at home and abroad, more efficient government, and freedom. This upcoming speakership election is our opportunity to gather together and light the right path for America.

The speakership vote will go down on Tuesday, January 3, 2023.
