Longtime North Carolina State radio broadcaster Gary Hahn has been indefinitely suspended for making a politically incorrect remark while calling his team’s college football bowl game.
During Friday’s coverage of the Duke’s Mayo Bowl pitting the NC State Wolfpack against the Maryland Terrapins in Charlotte, NC, Hahn provided listeners with a score update from the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl which was being played in El Paso, Texas. But his added color commentary proved to be his undoing despite it being truthful.
“One other bowl game involving an ACC team going on, that’s the Sun Bowl, and amongst all the illegal aliens down in El Paso, it’s UCLA 14 and Pittsburgh 6,” he said, not knowing that his off-the-cuff remark would potentially be a career killer in today’s intolerant environment where thin-skinned thought police are constantly on the prowl looking for scalps.

Hahn’s reference to “illegal aliens” led to his employer Learfield Communications, yanking him off the air indefinitely as the social media lynch mob swarmed to denounce him as a racist.
“Learfield has suspended Wolfpack Sports Network play-by-play announcer Gary Hahn from his agreement indefinitely following comments made during today’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl radio broadcast,” said Wolfpack Sports Properties general manager Kyle Winchester in a statement.
Earlier this month, El Paso’s Democrat Mayor Oscar Leeser declared a state of emergency ahead of the expected influx of illegal aliens due to the lifting of Title 42, the Trump-era immigration policy put in place to mitigate the spread of COVID during the pandemic.

In addition, the Sun Bowl Fan Fiesta was canceled with El Paso’s convention center currently being used as a shelter to house illegal immigrants due to unseasonably cold temperatures.
“Our Fan Fiesta scheduled for December 29 has now been canceled due to the state of emergency that has been declared. They are using the convention center to house some of these poor immigrants that are looking for shelter somewhere, so we have canceled the Fan Fiesta,” Sun Bowl Association Executive Director Bernie Olivas said.

Hahn has called football and basketball games for the NC State Wolfpack since 1991.
According to his official bio, “Before coming to NC State, Hahn worked on statewide radio sports networks for the University of Louisville, Ohio State University, and the University of Alabama. He was part of the broadcast team when Louisville won the NCAA Basketball Championship in 1980. He also called the 1985 Rose Bowl for the Ohio State Radio Network. In addition, Hahn described the 1986 NIT Championship that was won by the Buckeyes.”
“From 1981-83 Hahn was a sports anchor/reporter for the NBC Radio Network in New York City. He began his broadcasting career in 1970 while still a college student and also worked at WLWI-TV in Indianapolis in 1974-75,” the bio reads.
The Wolfpack found itself on the wrong end of a 16-12 score in a Duke’s Mayo Bowl snoozer while the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl featured a thrilling high-scoring shootout with Pitt pulling out the 37-35 win over UCLA and a long field goal with only seconds left on the clock “amongst all the illegal aliens down in El Paso.”
