Jake Tapper is not a half-glass-full kind of guy.
Despite the delivery of an 845-page Jan. 6 committee report that caters to his disdain for former President Donald Trump and a $1.7 trillion omnibus spending package that, among other disastrous things, passed the Electoral Count Act, aimed at making it even more difficult for Congress and the vice president to reject the results of an election, Tapper’s nose wrinkles at the thought of optimism.

The CNN host spoke to Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), a member of the theatrical Jan. 6 committee, on Friday about the viability of legislative recommendations made by the politically motivated panel, given that Republicans will soon be in control of the House.
Not even the thought of former President Donald Trump being barred by Congress from ever becoming President again — another of the committee’s recommendations — could improve Tapper’s disposition.
“Besides barring Trump from office, your report has 10 other recommendations, including reforming the Electoral Count Act, which was passed as part of the spending bill a few hours ago, there are other recommendations where you call on Congress to act or amend laws,” Tapper said. “I guess my question is, isn’t it too late for that to happen, considering the new Republican-controlled House gets sworn in in 11 days?”
Unlike her surly host, Lofgren remains hopeful that those Republicans still living in “a dreamworld” won’t stop the progress Democrats have made.
“Well, we hope not,” she replied to Tapper. “I would hope that anybody who takes an oath to the Constitution would be interested in pursuing remedies that would make the country safer. We’re certainly disappointed that many of our Republican colleagues are still living in kind of a dream world. But I do think the Senate can press this and if we come up with something that’s solid and bipartisan in the Senate, there’s no reason to think that we can’t get something done in the House as well. We just did with the Electoral Count Act as you know.”
As BizPac Review reported, Trump has called the Electoral Count Act “one big scam.”
On Tuesday, he took to Truth Social and, citing an op-ed from Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) published in The Hill, questioned the reform to the act.
“I don’t care whether they change The Electoral Count Act or not, probably better to leave it the way it is so that it can be adjusted in case of Fraud, but what I don’t like are the lies and ‘disinformation’ put out by the Democrats and RINOS. They said the Vice President has ‘absolutely no choice,’ it was carved in ‘steel,’ but if he has no choice, why are they changing the law saying he has no choice?” the frustrated MAGA King posted.
“In other words, John Eastman and others were correct in stating that the Vice President of the United States had the right to do what should have been done,” he continued in a follow-up post. “The only reason this change is being promulgated is to reform The Electoral Count Act so that the VP cannot do what they powerfully said he couldn’t do, but if it couldn’t be done, why are they making this law change? The whole thing is one big Scam!”

It’s a scam that made it this far because scam artists are still running the House — a fact Tapper was quick to point out.
“Yeah, you did because Nancy Pelosi’s in charge of the House right now, but Kevin McCarthy in all likelihood will be in charge in the House in a week and a half,” he shot back to Lofgren. “And he voted to disenfranchise all of the people of Pennsylvania and Arizona based on those election lies after people died in the insurrection.”
Naturally, Tapper failed to mention that the only person who was actually killed as a direct result of the events of Jan. 6 was Ashli Babbitt, an Air Force veteran who was fatally shot by Lt. Michael Byrd, a member of the Capitol Police.
But “people died” sounds far more dramatic, so he went with that.
The lack of distinction didn’t phase Lofgren, who called the so-called insurrection “inexcusable.”
“You’re right. It was inexcusable,” she quickly conceded. “I just, I guess I suffer from a persistent optimism, especially around the holidays.”
“I don’t have that affliction,” Tapper retorted.
