Dem senator doesn’t ‘know exactly’ what is in $1.7T omnibus but is ‘proud to support’ it anyway

There are dumb takes on important issues, and then there are takes that are so shockingly stupid they leave one slack-jawed.

Democratic Senator Chris Coons of Delaware can now proudly boast the latter.

Speaking on Friday’s episode of CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” Coons freely admitted that he doesn’t have a clue about what was packed into the $1.7 trillion omnibus spending package, but he’s super proud to have signed his name to it.

“I voted for the omnibus and I’m proud to support it, but I don’t like the process,” he stated. “And a bipartisan group of senators on the floor of the Senate were talking about how we can change this process going forward. Because frankly…when it all comes to the floor in the last few days and the last few hours, that doesn’t give us enough time to fully scrub and understand what other members have put in it.”

It’s not that Coons doesn’t get the gravity of his duty as an elected official. He does.

He said so.

But that responsibility failed to give him a moment’s pause for some rational thought.

“I understand that I’m responsible and so [are] my colleagues, the congressional delegation, for the congressionally-directed spending for Delaware,” he said, “but I don’t know exactly what every other member of the Senate has put in the bill.”

“So, frankly,” he continued, “it’s important for us to change the timing, to get back to following what’s in the law in terms of having open hearings early in the year, not late in the year.”

In other words, trillions of dollars America does not have just went flying out the door, but, hey, maybe next time he’ll be bothered to read a bill that could destroy an already crumbling economy, assuming, of course, he is granted a convenient amount of time to do so.

The thought of simply refusing to sign the legislation in deference to the people he purports to represent apparently never crossed his mind.

Of course, Democrats aren’t the only ones guilty of stupid takes. Nine House Republicans are also worthy of a trillion-dollar Dunce cap.

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY) noted that most of those RINOs are retiring and were “taking the pork and running.”

Appearing on Fox News’ “The Story,” Malliotakis stated that the bill was put to a vote “when people are busy with Christmas, not paying attention to the news,” and Congress didn’t insist on being able to read it before giving it the golden rubber stamp.

“Well, those are members who are, again, on their way out the door,” the New Yorker said. “And I think it’s kind of just taking the pork and running. And it is unfortunate, because I don’t believe that this is in the best interests of the American people.”

“Look, we need to get serious about spending in this country,” she stated. “We need to look for areas to cut. If you went through this bill — and I tried, it was 4,100 pages, we tried to do what we could in terms of going through it — you found a lot of wasteful programs, more money being spent to international organizations, more money being sent to umbrellas under the United Nations, more money being spent overseas for all sorts of purposes in other countries while we have American families struggling here at home.

“And the fact that we did not have the time to read it and that they’re trying to bring it when people are busy with Christmas, not paying attention to the news, that’s exactly what they want,” she said. “They don’t want the American people to know what’s in it. And that’s why they went through this process. They could have easily, in September, extended this for the rest of the year, the funding. But they chose to come back in December to give themselves one more bite at the apple should they lose in November’s election, that is exactly what happened.”
