Writer and actress Mindy Kaling’s demonstrated how out of touch Hollywood elites are with everyday citizens while criticizing her own wildly popular show as “so inappropriate” the characters “would be canceled.”

On Thursday, Kaling joined ABC’s “Good Morning America” for a sit-down interview when the topic of “The Office” was broached. After airing on NBC for nine seasons, eight of which Kaling worked on as both writer and actress before departing for her own show, co-host Robin Roberts wondered where her guest’s character, Kelly Kapoor, would have ended up in the years since the show’s finale.
Touching on the “inappropriate” behaviors of the characters she helped develop, Kaling responded, “I think she probably would’ve quit Dunder Mifflin to be an influencer. And then probably been canceled almost immediately. So that’s what I would see for her.”
Roberts was quick to agree, adding, “That’s pretty accurate, I think,” before the actress emphasized, “Actually most of the characters on that show probably would be canceled by now.”
When asked if she would be willing to introduce her young children to the programs, Kaling replied, “I kind of think maybe never. That show is so inappropriate. I mean, we always talk about–the writers I’m still in touch with now–we talk about how so much of that show we probably couldn’t make now.”
Fans of the show were perplexed by the assessment, noting how after almost a decade since its conclusion the show and show-themed products are front and center everywhere you look.

If you walk into a board game or novelty store, nearly half their inventory is Office-branded monopoly, card games, coffee mugs, clothing, stationery, etc. It's also the single most streamed show year after year, but yeah, people these days are too sensitive for it 🙄

One even pointed out how stars Steve Carell and Ricky Gervais (who appeared in the original British version of “The Office”) had made similar comments in the past and wondered, “Is it a rule that someone from the show has to say this every couple of years?”

Kaling went on to explain her view by saying, “Tastes have changed and honestly what offends people has changed so much now. And so I think that–actually it’s one of the reasons why the show’s popular cause people feel like there’s something kind of fearless about it or taboo that it talks about on the show. I mean, I think when they’re teenagers, they’ll probably want to, it seems like a 15-year-old boy is the biggest fan of ‘The Office’ right now.”
Piling on to the leftist misunderstanding of what comedy is supposed to be, co-host George Stephanopoulos spoke up, “I had a 15-year-old girl who spent all of COVID watching ‘The Office’ again and again and again.”
“I’m sure that was great for you,” Kaling snarked before Stephanopoulos prostrated to the premise, “You make me feel like a real failed parent right now.”
As far as whether a reboot would ever take place regardless of expressed views on the behavior of the characters, Carell himself had addressed the matter in 2018 with Collider and said, “I’ll tell you, no. I feel like I’m a broken record, talking about this because I get asked about it. The show is way more popular now than when it was on the air. I just can’t see it being the same thing, and I think most folks would want it to be the same thing, but it wouldn’t be.”
