Much ado was made at the White House when Sam Brinton joined the administration as the first “openly gender-fluid” official, but nary a word was spoken of his suspension more than a month ago as a felony charge has come to light.
This year’s pride month was capped off in President Joe Biden’s administration with the announcement that Brinton would be joining the Department of Energy as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition in the Office of Nuclear Energy. Bragging of “multiple graduate degrees from MIT” as just one of his qualifications not pertaining to his progressive identity, the nuclear policy specialist certainly belied his pedigree when he reportedly played dumb after allegedly stealing a stranger’s luggage.
According to a criminal complaint filed in late October Brinton had arrived at Minneapolis St. Paul Airport on Sept. 16 after departing Washington, D.C. where he proceeded to the baggage carousel. The government employee had reportedly checked no bags. It was there that he was alleged to have taken a $2,325 Vera Bradley suitcase, removed the identification tags, and used it when traveling to D.C. on Sept. 18 and Oct. 9.
This story is somehow far, far, far crazier than even the headline. Dude didn't check baggage for a flight, yet went to the carousel, took a woman's Vera Bradley rollerbag, and checked it on his next few flights. https://t.co/ZPhJOAfWpN

As it happened, the rightful owner had contacted officials regarding her lost luggage leading authorities to review surveillance footage. The court documents detailed how Brinton was seen on camera absconding with the suitcase. When contacted by law enforcement, he denied stealing anything but confirmed having possession of the luggage.
“If I had taken the wrong bag, I am happy to return it, but I don’t have any clothes for another individual,” he said before claiming. “That was my clothes when I opened the bag.”
Hours later, the MIT graduate revised his statement when he called the questioning officer back to apologize for not being “completely honest.”
As he put it, the error in his behavior had stemmed from being “tired and taking the suitcase thinking it was” his. The court documents went on to state, “DEFENDANT said when they opened the bag at the hotel, they realized it was not theirs. DEFENDANT got nervous people would think they stole the bag and did not know what to do. DEFENDANT stated they left the clothes from the bag inside the drawers in the hotel room.” However, “no clothing was recovered from the hotel room.”
So, Brinton says he accidentally picked up the wrong bag, and instead of owning up to his mistake, he said he just left the bag and all its contents in his hotel room.

This is weird. He took the bag back to the hotel and when confront, he lied and said it was his, then later finally admitted to leaving the clothes at the hotel and still taking the bag with him back to DC…He then said he did that because leaving the stolen bag would look weird

He didn’t like the clothes. Anyone else dying to know if this a regular shopping spot for SB?

Without initially addressing the cause for suspension about a month ago, a Department of Energy spokesperson had simply offered, “Sam Brinton is on leave from DOE, and Dr. Kim Petry is performing the duties of Deputy Assistant Secretary of Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition.”
A court hearing is scheduled for Dec. 19 as Brinton has been charged with felony theft of a movable property without consent and could face as much as a five-year sentence, a $10,000 fine, or both.
Further proof that we’re in good hands.
