Moscow, Idaho police have revealed new details concerning the quadruple homicide of four University of Idaho students last week.
The four college students, Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves, were stabbed to death while sleeping between the hours of 3 AM and 4 Am on Sunday morning according to police. The victims were in a King Road residence, close to the university campus.
Moscow Police Department Chief James Fry stated that when officers, responding to a 911 call, arrived on the scene, there was no sign of forced entry at the residence.
In an update released by police on Saturday, the Moscow Police Department said that the 911 call was made at 11:58 AM on Sunday morning “on one of the roommates’ cell phones.” Police have not revealed who made the phone call.
“The call was made from inside the residence on one of the roommates’ cellphones,” the MPD announced. “Moscow Police Department arrived shortly thereafter and found all four victims.”
Shortly before the events of the early morning, Mogen and Goncalves were seen at a local food vendor called the “Grub Truck” before being driven back to their King Road residence by a male.
Police have investigated their driver that night and do not believe him to be involved in the murders.
Detectives are also aware that “multiple phone calls from victims Madison and Kaylee to a male” were made between 2 AM and 3 AM. Goncalves’ sister, Alicia Goncalves, told Inside Edition that seven calls were made from her sister to a male named Jack, and three calls from Mogen were placed to the same individual.
“At 2:26 a.m. Kaylee starts to call Jack. Kaylee calls Jack six times between 2:26 a.m. to 2:44 a.m., and from 2:44 to 2:52 Maddie calls Jack three times, then Kaylee makes a final call to him at 2:52 a.m. And they are both never heard from again,” Goncalves said.
According to the press release, all four victims were on the second and third floors of the house.
Aaron Snell, a spokesperson on behalf of the Moscow Police Department, said in a phone interview with the Moscow Pullman Daily News that investigators are yet to identify a person of interest in the case.
“We continue to find and process leads,” Snell said. “At this moment we do not have an identified suspect.”
With such little information regarding the homicides, it is unknown whether or not the responsible party for the murders remains in the Moscow area.
“A murderer, or murderers, have been in our community or they are in someone else’s community,” Snell continued.
Alicia Goncalves has already taken matters into her own hands, commencing an investigation on her own. She found the video confirming her sister and Mogen were at the “Grub Truck”, and she personally tracked down their Uber driver. Goncalves even managed to acquire nearby residents’ video doorbell recordings to confirm that the Uber driver did deliver to young women safely to their home.
“We are not getting any answers and we are not going to settle for that,” she said.
The lack of evidence, and slow trickle of information coming from the Moscow Police Department, has lead to armchair investigators and internet sleuths wildly speculating on who the perpetrator(s) may be.
The parents of the victims are now having to contend with outlandish theories – from morose love triangles to drug infused conflict – concerning the nature of their children’s deaths. In an interview with the Independent, Kernodle’s father criticized the FBI for not “saying anything” and called the events his “worst nightmare.”
“How can you protect some kid? You keep them at home and don’t let him go to college? They’re not gonna stay at home like that,” Mr. Kernodle told The Independent. “So, it’s really mind-boggling. It’s just completely unthinkable and it’s the worst nightmare.”
