High-profile Rep wastes no time pitching himself to replace Nancy Pelosi

As House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., announces she will no longer seek a leadership role within the Democrat Party, someone has to step up to fill the void she will leave behind.

The announcement was abrupt and there has not yet been much time to consider who is capable of filling the roles she will vacate in the next Congress, but Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., believes he has what it takes.

The five-term representative wasted no time in writing up a letter that essentially pitches his service to his fellow Democrats.

“Today, I write to humbly ask for your support for the position of House Democratic Leader as we once again prepare to meet the moment,” he wrote. “Our Caucus must unify with purpose, communicate with discipline, legislate with precision and partner with the Biden administration to vigorously address the continuing challenges impacting our constituents.”

The letter comes not long after Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., announced her plan to run for another term as leader of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Jayapal was seen as Jeffries’s most-likely opponent for the seat, but the congresswoman indicated her desire to maintain her own position, for now, advancing progressive causes in the House.

“As Chair of the CPC, I will put my energy toward ensuring Democrats are not only a critically important ‘opposition’ party to push back on draconian MAGA-Republican policies, but also a ‘proposition’ party, with a real vision that builds an even bigger movement to lift up poor people, working people, people of color, immigrants, LGBTQ+ people, and those who just need a leg up to thrive not just survive,” Jayapal wrote in her own letter. “That is what will help propel us to victory in 2024.”

As of right now, there are no other names being thrown around for the position, making Jeffries a sure thing. However, it remains to be seen whether any other high-profile Dem reps will toss their hats into the ring.
