Trump ‘remains the frontrunner’ for GOP despite ‘hot mess’ midterms

Considering all that he’s done for her career, New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman has proclaimed that former President Donald J. Trump is still the Republican frontrunner for the White House even if the midterm elections were a major disappointment for the party.

Trump’s foes and critics have been dancing a jig on his political grave with many blaming him for the failure to retake the Senate, especially in Pennsylvania where his hand-picked candidate, Dr. Mehmet Oz lost in a humiliating fashion to the mentally incapacitated John Fetterman but as he has repeatedly proven over the years, the bombastic billionaire businessman is amazingly resilient and can never be counted out.

On Tuesday’s edition of the New York Times “The Daily” podcast, Haberman discussed the latest political developments with host Michael Barbaro on the day that Trump was slated to make his big announcement from his Mar-a-Lago residence and said that, despite buzz that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis would emerge as the favorite to battle Joe Biden or whoever the Democrats put up in 2024, it will be hard to beat Trump for the nomination.

“They actually believed in the final weeks leading up to it that there was going to be a red wave as we’ve all heard about,” she said. “But then the midterms happened and they were kind of a mess for Republicans.”

“No,” Haberman said. “And the wind is not at his back Michael because the midterms did not go the way Republicans thought they were going to, they were a hot mess and a major reason they were a hot mess is Donald Trump.”

“Not the only reason, but he made hundreds of endorsements all up and down the ballot, a bunch of which didn’t matter but the ones that did matter were in Senate contests where he helped himself in and helped recruit and pick candidates and endorse candidates who other Republican leaders saw as problematic,” she continued.

“Right, not exactly wind at Donald Trump’s back,” added Barbaro.”So it would be fair to say that from the moment Donald Trump enters this race tonight at Mar a Lago, he is the clear front-runner.”

Haberman responded, “That is correct.”

“You say that without any ambiguity,” Barbaro countered.

“Until I see evidence that somebody is able to beat him among voters, Trump remains the frontrunner,” Haberman answered.

Trump and the Times’ star reporter have often clashed with the ex-POTUS affectionately giving her the nickname of “Maggot Haberman” for her wild scoops including that he was flushing documents down the White House toilets and, more recently, blasting her new book that’s chock full of juicy gossip about his tenure at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW.

“Here we go again! Another Fake book is out, this one, supposedly very boring and stale, by self appointed head case, Failing (unfunded liability!) New York Times writer, Maggie Hagerman. In it she tells many made up stories, with zero fact checking or confirmation by anyone who would know, like me. In one case she lies about me wanting to fire my daughter, Ivanka, and Jared. WRONG, pure fiction. Never even crossed my mind. Just have to fight trouble making creeps like Maggie, and all the rest!” Trump wrote on Truth Social after her book, “Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America” came out last month.

Haberman also lamented that GOP lawmakers didn’t do enough to take Trump out using the so-called “insurrection” as justification.

“Yes. And they have some blame in that, Michael, because they could have spoken out more forcefully at various points, and some of them did, but most of them did not. And particular moments when that could have come were his two impeachment trials, especially the second one, which was after the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot,” she said.” And if these senators had wanted Trump not to run again, they could have voted to convict. But instead, they decided not to take an action that would have imperiled them with their voters, many of whom like Donald Trump.”
